Removing Front Axle

WARNING: Incorrect handling of high-voltage components 
  • Electric shock

    • Only appropriately trained and authorised persons are permitted to work on high-voltage vehicles and components.
    • Required qualification: High voltage technician or high voltage expert.
    • Observe national requirements and legislation for this work.
    • Always use insulated tools, e.g. > VAS 6883 - Insulated Tool Set  when working on these components. Observe general warning notes for working on the high-voltage system.

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    • Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

  1. Detach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P5) -2-  from front axle.

    1. 1.1  Remove screws -3-  .
    2. 1.2  Move aside holder -1-  with coolant pump (P5) -2-  .
  2. Detach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P1) -2-  from front axle.

    1. 2.1  Remove screws -3-  .
    2. 2.2  Move aside holder -1-  with coolant pump (P1) -2-  .
  3. Detach directional-control valve -1-  from directional-control valve holder -2-  .

    1. 3.1  Remove screws -3-  .
    2. 3.2  Move directional-control valve -1-  aside.
  4. Remove directional-control valve holder -1-  .

    1. 4.1  Remove screws -2-  .
    2. 4.2  Remove directional-control valve holder -1-  .
  5. Loosen wire harness holder -1-  .
    1. 5.1  Release and pull off cable plug -2-  .
    2. 5.2  Unscrew screw -3-  .
    3. 5.3  Unscrew screw -4-  .
    4. 5.4  Hang wire harness holder -1-  together with wire harness -5-  at the side.

  6. Loosen upper trailing arm -1-  from wheel bearing housing -2-  .

    1. 6.1  Unscrew nut -3-  and counter at screw -4-  at the same time.
    2. 6.2  Loosen upper trailing arms -1-  from wheel bearing housing -2-  .
  7. Release and disconnect cable plug -1-  , then remove from the holder -2-  .

  8. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Disconnect electric lines -1-  from air-spring strut -2-  .

    1. 8.1  Release and pull off cable plug -3-  .
    2. 8.2  Pull the electrical line -1-  out of the holder -4-  .

    CAUTION: Escaping residual air 
    • Risk of eye injuries 
      • Wear protective goggles.

    Information 

    • Disconnect air lines only at the connection for the air spring  .
    • There is a pressure retaining valve only on the front axle  .
    • Observe specified tightening torque for the Voss threaded joint  .

    Information 

    The cutting ring -1-  and Voss threaded joint -2-  must remain on the air line -3-  .

  9. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Disconnect air line -1-  from the air-spring strut -2-  .

    1. 9.1  Slowly unscrew Voss threaded joint for the air line -3-  and disconnect air line -1-  .

  10. Detach spring strut -1-  from the spring-strut dome.

    1. 10.1  Unscrew nuts -2-  .
  11. Detach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P2) -2-  from front axle.

    1. 11.1  Remove screw -3-  .
    2. 11.2  Unclip coolant hoses -4-  from holder -5-  .
    3. 11.3  Remove screws -6-  .
    4. 11.4  Move aside holder -1-  with coolant pump (P2) -2-  .
  12. Detach electrical line from 12 V HV battery -1-  .

    1. 12.1  Release and disconnect cable plugs from 12 V HV battery -2-  .
    2. 12.2  Suspend electric line for 12 V HV battery -1-  at the side.

      Information 

      Replace damaged clips.

  13. Disconnect electric wire harness for power-steering gear -1-  from front axle.

    1. 13.1  Release and disconnect cable plug on power-steering gear -2-  .
    2. 13.2  Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 13.3  Release and disconnect cable plug for HV battery temperature -4-  .
    4. 13.4  Unclip clips -5 and 6-  .
    5. 13.5  Guide electric wire harness for power-steering gear -1-  out of front axle and place to one side.
  14. Disconnect coolant hose from HV battery -1-  .

    1. 14.1  Release and pull off plug-in coupling -2-  .
    2. 14.2  Catch escaping coolant and close offline connections using suitable stoppers.
    3. 14.3  Remove screw -3-  .
    4. 14.4  Unclip holder for HV battery coolant hose -4-  .
    5. 14.5  Guide the HV battery coolant hose -1-  out of the front axle and set aside.
  15. Loosen universal joint for steering column -1-  .

    1. 15.1  Unscrew screw -2-  .
    2. 15.2  Pull universal joint for steering column -1-  off the power-steering gear -3-  .
  16. Detach power-steering gear -1-  .
    1. 16.1  Unscrew nut -2-  and counter at screw -3-  at the same time.
    2. 16.2  Remove screw -3-  .
    3. 16.3  Remove screws -4-  .
    4. 16.4  Push the power-steering gear -1-  inside the axle mountings forwards to give access to the air-conditioning compressor.

  17. Disconnect electrical line -2-  from the air-conditioning compressor -1-  .

    1. 17.1  Unclip clips -3-  .
    2. 17.2  Release and pull off cable plug -4-  .
    3. 17.3  Unscrew screw -5-  and remove equipotential bonding line -6-  .
  18. Detach air-conditioning compressor -1-  from front axle, making sure not to open the refrigerant lines.

    1. 18.1  Unscrew nuts -2-  and counter at the screws -3-  at the same time.
  19. Support air-conditioning compressor -1-  using mounting lever HAZET 650-20 -2-  .

    Information 

    • The help of another person is required for this step  .
    • While lowering, get another person to check that the components have adequate clearance  .
  20. Remove front axle -1-  .

    1. 20.1  Place > VAS 6832/8 - universal assembly device  as described under Tool information and secure on the > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  .
    2. 20.2  Position > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  under the front-axle carrier -1-  and carefully fit > VAS 6832/8 - universal assembly device  .
    3. 20.3  Secure wheel hub holder -1-  to the wheel hub on both sides using assembly pins/wheel bolt -2-  .

    4. 20.4  Mark position of the front axle on the body.
    5. 20.5  Unscrew screws -2 to 4-  .
    6. 20.6  Carefully lower the front axle -1-  on > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  and get another person to help guide it down.
