Preliminary Work

Information 

To ensure access to the vehicle interior after disconnecting the battery, the door window on the driver's side must be opened before disconnecting the battery.

  1. Open door window on driver's side.
  2. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Release air from the levelling system.

    > 430117 BLEEDING AND FILLING THE LEVELLING SYSTEM

  3. Isolate the high-voltage system from the power supply.

    > Refer to 2X00IN Isolating high-voltage system from power supply/Starting high-voltage system in the appropriate service information.

  4. Drain coolant.

    > 193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT

  5. Drain refrigerant.

    > 870317 DRAINING AND FILLING REFRIGERANT R134A

    > 870317 DRAINING AND FILLING REFRIGERANT R1234YF

  6. Remove brake disc air guide on front-axle carrier and brake disc air guide on front spring strut.

  7. Remove front apron.

    > 631519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT APRON

  8. Remove pedestrian protection support -1-  .
    1. 8.1  Unscrew nuts -2-  on pedestrian protection support -1-  .
    2. 8.2  Remove pedestrian protection support -1-  .

  9. Detach radiator and hang in a suitable place.

    > 197019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING RADIATOR

    NOTE: Opened refrigerant system for repairs  .
    • Risk of moisture getting into the refrigerant system  .
    • Risk of contaminating the refrigerant circuit  .
    • Risk of saturation and irreparable damage to desiccator  .
    • Irreparable damage to the desiccator can damage the compressor and evaporator  .
      • After opening the refrigerant circuit, close off the refrigerant lines/connections immediately using the relevant stoppers. To avoid contaminating the refrigerant circuit, the stoppers for the different refrigerants must be stored and used separately.
      • The desiccator must be replaced if the air humidity is high and if the refrigerant circuit is left open for a long time.
  10. Loosen condenser and suspend it at a suitable position by disconnecting only the lower left condenser cable from the condenser.
    1. 10.1  Remove the air guide -1-  on the condenser -2-  frame.
      1. 10.1.1  Remove screws -3-  .
      2. 10.1.2  Unclip clips -4-  and remove air guide -1-  .

    2. 10.2  Unscrew screw -3-  from refrigerant line -1-  at the condenser -2-  and pull off refrigerant line -1-  .

    3. 10.3  Unscrew screws -2-  from condenser fan housing -1-  at the body and suspend condenser in a suitable position.

  11. Remove luggage compartment liner.

    > 501919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LINER

  12. Loosen coolant distributor for high-voltage system -1-  from the front axle and do not loosen coolant lines.
    1. 12.1  Remove screws -2-  .
    2. 12.2  Loosen holder -3-  .
      1. 12.2.1  Remove screws -4 and 5-  .

  13. Remove front wheels.

    > 440519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WHEEL

  14. Remove front wheel housing liners.

    > 505619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER

  15. Loosen front brake callipers.

    > 473909 LOOSENING AND SECURING FRONT BRAKE CALLIPER

  16. Remove front-axle support (front section).

    > 400819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT-AXLE SUPPORT (FRONT SECTION) 

  17. Remove front-axle support (rear section).

    > 400819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT-AXLE SUPPORT (REAR SECTION)
