Installing Front Axle

WARNING: Incorrect handling of high-voltage components 
  • Electric shock 
  • Short circuit

    • Only appropriately trained and authorised persons are permitted to work on high-voltage vehicles and components.
    • Required qualification: High voltage technician or high voltage expert.
    • Observe national requirements and legislation for this work.
    • Always use insulated tools, e.g. > VAS 6883 - Insulated Tool Set  when working on these components. Observe general warning notes for working on the high-voltage system.
    • > 2X00IN GENERAL WARNING NOTES FOR WORKING ON THE HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM
WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    • Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 
    • Wear personal protective gear.
    • Get someone to help if necessary.

Information 

  1. Install front axle -1-  .

    1. 1.1  Place > VAS 6832/8 - universal assembly device  as described under Tool information and secure on the > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  .
    2. 1.2  Position front axle -1-  on > VAS 6832/8 - universal assembly device  with the help of another person.
    3. 1.3  Position > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  under the front-axle carrier -1-  , then carefully move the front axle with spring strut or air-spring strut into installation position and get another person to help guide it.
    4. 1.4  Fit and tighten new screws -2 to 4-  .

      > Tightening torque 70 Nm (52 ftlb.) 

      > Torque angle + 180 ° 

    5. 1.5  > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  can now be lowered.
  2. Secure air-conditioning compressor -1-  on front axle.

    1. 2.1  Screw on and tighten nuts -2-  and counter at the screws -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

  3. Remove mounting lever HAZET 650-20 
  4. Attach electric line -2-  to air-conditioning compressor -1-  .

    1. 4.1  Attach equipotential bonding line -6-  , then fit and tighten screw -5-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

    2. 4.2  Connect and lock cable plug -4-  .
    3. 4.3  Clip in clips -3-  .
  5. Install power-steering gear -1-  .
    1. 5.1  Position power-steering gear -1-  in the supports.
    2. 5.2  Screw in new  screws -4-  .
    3. 5.3  Insert new  screw -3-  .
    4. 5.4  Screw on and tighten new  nut -2-  and counter at screw -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

      > Torque angle + 180 ° 

    5. 5.5  Tighten the screws -4-  .

      > Tightening torque 70 Nm (52 ftlb.) 

      > Torque angle + 180 °

      Power-steering gear

  6. Connect universal joint for steering column -1-  .

    1. 6.1  Connect universal joint for steering column -1-  to the power-steering gear -3-  .
    2. 6.2  Fit and tighten new  screw -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

      > Torque angle 90 ° 

  7. Secure coolant hose on HV battery -1-  befestigen.

    1. 7.1  Position coolant hose on HV battery -1-  .
    2. 7.2  Connect and lock plug-in coupling -2-  .
    3. 7.3  Fit and tighten screw -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

    4. 7.4  Clip in holder for HV battery coolant hose -4-  .
  8. Attach electric wire harness for power-steering gear -1-  to front axle.

    1. 8.1  Position electric wire harness for power-steering gear -1-  on front axle.
    2. 8.2  Push on and lock cable plug for HV battery temperature sensor -4-  .
    3. 8.3  Clip in clips -5 and 6-  .
    4. 8.4  Push on and lock cable plug for power-steering gear -2-  .
    5. 8.5  Clip in clips -3-  .
  9. Connect electrical line to 12V HV battery -1-  .

    1. 9.1  Connect and lock cable plug -2-  .
  10. Attach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P2) -2-  to front axle.

    1. 10.1  Position holder -1-  with coolant pump (P2) -2-  .
    2. 10.2  Fit and tighten screws -6-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

    3. 10.3  Clip coolant hose -4-  into holder -5-  .
    4. 10.4  Fit and tighten screw -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)

  11. Attach spring strut -1-  to spring-strut dome.

    1. 11.1  Screw on new  nuts -2-  , but do not tighten yet.

      Information 

      Check the following before installing the air line:

      • Check that the cutting ring -1-  and Voss threaded joint -2-  are still on the air line -3-  .
      • Check that the air line is fitted correctly.

        Only one marking -1-  on the air line should be visible.

        Pull the air line briefly against the insertion direction. If it cannot be pulled out, the air line is fitted correctly.

  12. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Secure air line -3-  on air-spring strut -2-  .

    1. 12.1  Connect air line -1-  and tighten Voss threaded joint on the air line -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 3 Nm (2 ftlb.)

  13. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Connect electric lines -1-  to air-spring strut -2-  .

    1. 13.1  Clip electric line -1-  into the holder -4-  .
    2. 13.2  Connect and lock cable plug -3-  .

  14. Clip top air-spring strut cable plug -1-  into holder -2-  , insert and lock.

    Information

  15. Secure upper trailing arms -1-  to the wheel bearing housing -2-  .

    1. 15.1  Position upper trailing arm -1-  in wheel bearing housing -2-  and insert new  screw -4-  .
    2. 15.2  Screw on new  nut -3-  , but do not tighten yet.

      Information 

      Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

  16. Lift the wheel bearing housing as far as required using the > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  until the lower trailing arm is horizontal. > Zero position (similar to illustration) 
    1. 16.1  For vehicles with air spring system, observe the description for draining and filling the air-spring struts prior to lifting to zero position!

  17. Tighten nuts -2-  .

    > Tightening torque 40 Nm (30 ftlb.) 

    > Torque angle + 45 °

  18. Tighten nut -3-  and counter at screw -4-  .

    > Tightening torque 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.) 

    > Torque angle + 45 °

  19. Lower > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  .

  20. Secure wire harness holder -1-  .

    1. 20.1  Position wire harness holder -1-  together with the wire harness -5-  .
    2. 20.2  Fit and tighten screws -3 and 4-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

    3. 20.3  Connect and lock cable plug -2-  .
  21. Install directional-control valve holder -1-  .

  22. Attach directional-control valve -1-  to directional-control valve holder -2-  .

    1. 22.1  Position directional-control valve -1-  .
    2. 22.2  Fit and tighten screws -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

  23. Attach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P1) -2-  to front axle.

    1. 23.1  Position holder -1-  with coolant pump (P1) -2-  .
    2. 23.2  Fit and tighten screws -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 

  24. Attach holder -1-  with coolant pump (P5) -2-  to front axle.

    2. 24.2  Fit and tighten screws -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
