Installing Power-Steering Gear

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Convert heat shields -1-  to suit new power-steering gear.

    Mounting for heat shields

    1. 1.1 Unscrew screws -2-  and tighten them on the new power-steering gear > Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 ftlb.) 
  2. Place power-steering gear in installation position with the help of another person.

    Information 

    The screws for the main bearings -2-  on the power-steering gear must only be tightened when the secondary bearing on the power steering gear has been screwed on without tightening it -3-  .

    Otherwise, the screw -3-  on the secondary bearing can break.

  3. Fit screws -2-  on the main bearing of the power-steering gear -1-  (do not tighten!). They will be tightened during subsequent work.

  4. Fit new screw -1-  and nut -2-  on secondary bearing for power-steering gear.

  5. Secure electric line -1-  on the power-steering gear -2-  .

    1. 5.1 Connect and lock electric connectors -3-  .
    2. 5.2 Secure bracket -4-  .
  6. Fit tie-rod ball -1-  at the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 6.1 Tighten nut -2-  > Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) 
  7. Attach and lock cable plug -2-  to front speed sensor -1-  .

  8. Attach the universal joint -1-  to the power-steering gear.
    1. 8.1 Align pins for steering column in accordance with markings for left/right-hand drive vehicles >Steering in Centre position.

    2. 8.2 Slide universal joint onto the pin on the steering gear.
    3. 8.3 Tighten new screw -2-  . >Initial tightening 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) Final tightening torque angle + 90°
