Component Exchange After Airbag/Seat-Belt Pretensioner Triggering
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
The following components must be removed and replaced after the airbag system is triggered:
Airbag unit, driver's side:
- Airbag unit on driver's side.
- Contact unit.
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
- Airbag sensors: see below SeeSee .
Airbag unit, passenger's side:
- Airbag unit on passenger's side.
- Dashboard.
- Check dashboard bracket for deformation and replace it if necessary.
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
- Airbag sensors: see below SeeSee .
Side airbag unit, seat:
- Side airbag unit in seat.
- Seat covering, deformed seat components.
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
- Airbag sensors: see below SeeSee .
Head airbag unit:
- Head airbag unit.
- Replace headliner.
- Airbag sensors: see below SeeSee .
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
Knee airbag on driver's side:
- Trim panel under dashboard with knee airbag on driver's side.
- Airbag sensors: see below SeeSee .
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
Airbag sensor:
- Always replace all airbag sensors in damaged/deformed areas of the vehicle.
- Otherwise (i.e. even if the vehicle was not crashed), replace the airbag sensors if they show signs of mechanical damage and/or if the airbag control unit detects that the airbag sensor is faulty (use > 9900 - PIWIS Tester 3 to read out the fault memory).
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
Seat-belt pretensioner:
- All belt tensioner units.
- Triggering unit after the system is triggered for the third time.
Because it is difficult to visually determine if one or more belt tensioners has been triggered, check the following points:
Read out the fault memory using > 9900 - PIWIS Tester 3 .
Check plug connection on the seat-belt pretensioner for damage.
Pull out the belt strap as far as possible and check for wear.
Perform a function test on the automatic belt device.
