Replacing Trailer Hitch Control Unit

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

  1. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  2. Select the vehicle type if required.
  3. Select the Trailer hitch  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  4. Coding/programming  must be selected.
  5. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  6. The message "Coding was completed successfully" appears. Press F12 to continue.
  7. Select the Drive links/checks  menu in the overview  .
  8. Trailer hitch  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  9. Trailer hitch calibration  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  10. Read and follow the information and instructions on the Tester. Press F8 to start.
  11. Go back to the overview. Press F11 to continue.
  12. Fault memory  must then be selected and erased.
  13. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
  14. Carry out a function test.
