Removing Rear Axle Housing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove protective plate on the rear axle housing bearing -1-  on both sides of the vehicle.

    Mounting for protective plate

    1. 1.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
  2. Only for vehicles with PDCC:  Expose PDCC wire harness.
    1. 2.1 Disconnect PDCC wire harness at the PDCC control unit (observe specified sequence!).

      Sequence for disconnecting the electric plug connections

      1. 2.1.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connections from the PDCC control unit in the sequence -1 to 5-  .
    2. 2.2 Unscrew fastening screw on the rear axle housing -2-  .
    3. 2.3 Unscrew fastening screw for ground line -3-  .
    4. 2.4 Remove PDCC wire harness from the brackets -4-  .

    5. 2.5 Disconnect PDCC wire harness -1-  at the rear axle housing.

      1. 2.5.1 Unscrew fastening screw -2-  .
  3. Only for vehicles with rear axle steering:  Release and disconnect electric plug connections -1-  on servo motor for rear axle steering -2-  .

  4. Only for vehicles with rear differential lock:  Disconnect electric plug connection from servo motor for rear-differential lock.
    1. 4.1 Remove protective plate for drive shaft at the left -1-  .

      1. 4.1.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  on servo motor for rear-differential lock -2-  and remove line from the brackets -3-  .

  5. Only for vehicles with air suspension:  Disconnect plug connections on air spring bellows -1-  and from air spring bellows to the body.

    1. 5.1 Release and disconnect electric connector -2-  .
      CAUTION: Escaping residual air 
      • Risk of eye injuries 

        → Wear protective goggles.

    2. 5.2 Slowly unscrew Voss threaded joint for the air line -3-  . Do not unscrew Voss threaded joint fully until residual pressure has escaped.
    3. 5.3 Unclip air spring bellows at the body mounting points.

      Clip -1-  must always be replaced following removal and may therefore be damaged irreparably during removal.

      1. 5.3.1 Pull the air spring bellows on one side down slightly until the clip -1-  is accessible.
      2. 5.3.2 Loosen clip connection -1-  .
  6. Only for PHEV vehicles:  Expose coolant lines -1 and 2-  .

    Mounting for coolant lines (PHEV only)

    1. 6.1 Release and disconnect electric connector -3-  .
    2. 6.2 Loosen brackets -4-  .
      WARNING: Hot fluid 
      • Danger of scalding 

        → Avoid contact with hot fluid.

        → Wear personal protective gear.

      Information 

      After disconnecting hoses, close off all openings immediately using commercially available rubber stoppers.

      When fitting parts, do not remove stoppers until shortly before installation.

    3. 6.3 Open clamps using > VAS 6889 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers-5-  and disconnect coolant hoses.
  7. Release and disconnect electric connector -2-  on both sides of the vehicle from the rear angle sensor for HBA -1-  .

  8. Release and disconnect electric plug connection -2-  on the TPM control unit -1-  .

  9. Release and disconnect electric plug connections -1-  on both sides of the vehicle and remove them from holder -2-  . Disconnect the line at the vehicle from the brackets on the rear axle housing.

  10. Remove heat insulation in luggage compartment pan -1-  .

    1. 10.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
  11. Remove rear-axle strut -1-  .

    1. 11.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2 and 3-  .
  12. If installed:  Unscrew fastening screws -1-  for vibration balancer.

  13. Remove shock absorber -1-  on both sides of the vehicle from the body.

    1. 13.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
  14. Raise the rear axle housing using > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  and > VAS 6832/7 - Assembly fixture - Panamera G2  .
    1. 14.1 > VAS 6832/7 - Assembly fixture - Panamera G2  must be prepared in such a way that only the assembly drivers for the rear axle are fitted (see "HA" (rear axle) marking on > VAS 6832/7 - Assembly fixture - Panamera G2  ).
    2. 14.2 Position elevating platform > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  with > VAS 6832/7 - Assembly fixture - Panamera G2  under the vehicle and adjust the height of the assembly drivers so that the rear axle housing can be raised evenly.
    3. 14.3 Carefully guide assembly drivers into the jacking points -1-  on the rear axle housing.

    4. 14.4 Mark the position of the rear axle housing (at least at the 2 front bolting points on the rear axle housing) on the body. This will give you a rough idea of the correct position for re-installation. Marking (example)

    5. 14.5 Unscrew fastening screws -1-  from the rear axle housing.

    6. 14.6 > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  must now be lowered by approx. 5 cm. Then release and disconnect electric plug connection for PASM on the shock absorber -2-  at both sides of the vehicle.

    7. 14.7 > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  must be lowered slowly.
