Replacing Front Bearing

Information 

The following tools are required for replacing the front bearing:

  1. Mark the position of the cut-out -1-  on the rear axle housing (for positioning the new bearing).

  2. Press out the front bearing.

    Pressing out front bearing

    1  Pressure piece 9698/1-5 
    2  Small insert 9698/1-3 
    3  Sleeve 9698/1-1 
    4  > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder 
    1. 2.1 Centre the pressure piece 9698/1-5 on the front bearing.
    2. 2.2 Fit small insert 9698/1-3 on sleeve 9698/1-1 and centre it on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
    3. 2.3 Press out the front bearing.
  3. De-burr edges -1-  of the cut-outs in the bearing seat.

    Pressing in front bearing

    1  Pressure piece 9698/1-7 
    2  Front bearing
    3  Pin 9698/1-9  (4x) screwed into washer 9698/1-8  , position A
    4  Washer 9698/1-8 
    5  > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder 
    1. 4.1 Screw four pins 9698/1-9  into washer 9698/1-8  (position A).
    2. 4.2 Centre the pressure piece 9698/1-7  on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
    3. 4.3 Fit the front bearing at a centre position on the bearing seat.
    4. 4.4 Centre pin 9698/1-9  with washer 9698/1-8  on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
    5. 4.5 Align front bearing using -marking-  (see See  ).

      If there is no marking: The cut-out -1-  must point towards the rear in direction of travel.

      Aligning front bearing

      Information 

      Overpressing the bearing can damage the rubber. The bearing must be replaced in this case.

    6. 4.6 Press the front bearing in as far as required until there is no gap between the rubber -1-  and the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
