Removing Lower Trailing Arm

CAUTION: Electrically moved components 
  • Danger of limbs being trapped 

    → Switch off electric power to drive motor.

    → Make sure it does not switch on again.

    → Check that there is no electric charge.

Information 

The PDCC system can be active when the ignition is switched on (even when the vehicle is stationary). To avoid injury/crushing, only work near the anti-roll bar, lower trailing arm and bellows of the steering gear when the ignition is switched off and always allow for the run-on time of 60 seconds.

  1. Remove spring strut on the lower trailing arm -1-  .

    1. 1.1 On vehicles with all-wheel drive, fit protective tube (shop-made) on the drive shaft to prevent damage due to contact with the spring strut prongs. >Protective tube (example)

    2. 1.2 Support upper trailing arm on the body using >VW552 - Spring tensioner  to prevent damage to the ball joint on the upper trailing arm due to the weight of the wheel bearing housing.
      1. 1.2.1 >VW552 - Spring tensioner  must be secured to body >Securing spring compressor to body  .

      2. 1.2.2 >VW552 - Spring tensioner  must be secured to the upper trailing arm >Securing spring compressor to upper trailing arm  .

      3. 1.2.3 >VW552 - Spring tensioner  must be pre-tensioned slightly.
    3. 1.3 Remove threaded joint -2-  . To do this, lift the wheel bearing housing up slightly with the help of a lifting device (e.g. >VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  ).
  2. Remove lower trailing arm -1-  on the front-axle carrier.

    1. 2.1 Remove threaded joint -2-  .
    2. 2.2 Only for vehicles with diesel engine:  Make threaded joint -3-  accessible.

      1. 2.2.1 Remove expansion rivets -2-  .
      2. 2.2.2 Press heat insulation -1-  in as far as required so that the threaded joint -3-  is accessible.
    3. 2.3 Remove threaded joint -3-  .
    4. 2.4 Turn the steering in fully so that the threaded joint -4-  is accessible.
      • Left trailing arm: Turn steering to the left.
      • Right trailing arm: Turn steering to the right.
    5. 2.5 Remove threaded joint -4-  .
  3. Remove lower trailing arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 3.1 Remove sleeve -1-  from >T10187 - Press-out tool  .

    2. 3.2 Unscrew nut -2-  on joint pin for lower axle joint as far as required until it is flush with the upper edge of the joint pin.
    3. 3.3 Press off joint pin on the lower trailing arm using >T10187 - Press-out tool  . >Pressing off joint pin

    4. 3.4 Screw off nut -2-  on joint pin for the axle joint.
  4. Remove lower trailing arm.

    1. 4.1 Pull lower trailing arm out of the mounts on the front-axle carrier -arrow A-  .
    2. 4.2 Carefully pull joint pin for the lower trailing arm out of the taper bushing on the wheel bearing housing and swivel it down and out -arrow B-  .
