Removing Turbocharger

NOTE: Dirt and contamination 
  • Risk of damage to units or components 

    → Protect components from dirt and contamination.

    → Clean or replace dirty components.

  1. To remove the left turbocharger, loosen the connecting clamp for the primary catalytic converter at the left.
  2. Turbocharger on right-hand side:  Disconnect vent line -1-  on the oil separator -2-  , pull off vacuum hose -3-  on the vacuum modulator and disconnect cable plug -4-  on the diverter valve.
  3. For replacing turbo chargers:  Separate positive crankcase ventilation hose.

  4. Turbocharger on left-hand side:  Pull off vacuum hose -1-  on the vacuum modulator and disconnect cable plug -2-  on the diverter valve.

    Information 

    • Clean all line connections carefully and close them off or cover them. 
    • Use suitable stoppers for closing off lines. 
  5. Remove oil pipe -1-  supply line.
    1. 5.1 Unscrew screw -2-  at the front and remove screw using a bar magnet.
    2. 5.2 Unscrew rear screws -3-  .
    3. 5.3 Lift cover plates on the coolant lines using a wedge and pull them up -Arrows-  .
    4. 5.4 Disconnect oil pipes on the turbocharger. Collect escaping oil.
    5. 5.5 Disconnect oil pipe at the front. Collect escaping oil.
    6. 5.6 Replace O-rings.

  6. Disconnect front oil pipes return -1-  at the front.
    1. 6.1 Unscrew screw -2-  and remove it using a bar magnet.
    2. 6.2 First disconnect the line for the turbocharger on bank 1-4; the flange secures the line for the turbocharger on bank 5-8.

      Return oil pipes

  7. Unscrew screw for retainer plate for coolant lines -2 and 3-  at the rear.
    1. 7.1 Unscrew screws -1-  .
    2. 7.2 Remove retainer plate -4-  and disconnect coolant lines. Catch escaping coolant.
    3. 7.3 Replace O-rings.

  8. Loosen connecting clamp -1-  for the exhaust manifold.

    Tool: long socket-wrench insert (a/f 13) required! 

    1. 8.1 Unscrew hexagon nut -2-  on the connecting clamp.

  9. Remove turbocharger and carefully disconnect and close off the front oil pipe. Collect escaping oil.
    1. 9.1 Replace O-rings. 
  10. Replace gaskets -1- and connecting clamps -3- on the exhaust manifold -2-  .

  11. Carefully clean sealing faces, line connections and adjacent areas.
