Removing Cylinder Head

  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    1. → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

NOTIFICATION 

Dirt and contamination 

  1. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  .

    Coolant hose on cylinder head

    1. 1.1  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using VAS 6891 - spring band clamp pliers  .
    2. 1.2  Pull off coolant hose -1-  .
    3. 1.3  Catch emerging coolant.
  2. Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .

    Temperature sensor

  3. Disconnect pressure hose -1-  .

    Pressure hose

    1. 3.1  Loosen screw-type clamp -2-  .
    2. 3.2  Disconnect pressure hose -1-  .
  4. Disconnect coolant line -1-  .

    Line

    1. 4.1  Unscrew screws -2 and 3-  .
    2. 4.2  Set coolant line -1-  aside.
  5. Disconnect electric wire harness for throttle housing -1-  .

    1. 5.1  Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .
    2. 5.2  Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 5.3  Move electric wire harness for throttle housing -1-  aside.
  6. Release and disconnect cable plug for fuel pressure sensor -1-  .

  7. Disconnect electric wire harness -1-  .

    1. 7.1  Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .
    2. 7.2  Set electric wire harness -1-  aside.
  8. Disconnect lines -1-  .

    Lines on intake-air distributor

    1. 8.1  Release and pull off plug-in coupling -2-  .
    2. 8.2  Close off openings using suitable stoppers.
    3. 8.3  Unclip clip -3-  .
    4. 8.4  Unclip lines -1-  from clips -4-  and set them aside.
    5. 8.5  Disconnect vacuum lines -5-  and set them aside.
  9. Release and disconnect cable plugs -1 to 4-  and unclip them from the holders.

  10. Disconnect electric line for generator -1-  .

    1. 10.1  Unclip clip -2-  from holder -3-  .
    2. 10.2  Set electric line for generator -1-  aside.
  11. Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .

    Hall sender for intake camshaft 

  12. Remove support for intake-air distributor -1-  .

    Support for intake-air distributor

    1. 12.1  Unscrew nut -2-  .
    2. 12.2  Unscrew screw -3-  .
    3. 12.3  Remove support for intake-air distributor -1-  and guide it out of the engine compartment.

    Information 

    Check that all lines and cables are disconnected.

    Information 

    You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

  13. Remove cylinder head.
    1. 13.1  Unscrew screws -Arrows-  .
      1. 13.1.1  Replace screws.
    2. 13.2  Unscrew cylinder head screws in the sequence -1 to 10-  using T10070 - special wrench, long reach Polydrive  .

      Observe specified sequence. 

      1. 13.2.1  Replace cylinder head screws.
    3. 13.3  Remove cylinder head and place it on a soft surface.

      The help of another person is required. 

    4. 13.4  Remove and dispose of old cylinder head gasket.

  14. Clean the sealing faces on the cylinder head and crankcase.
    1. 14.1  Carefully remove residual sealant from the cylinder head and crankcase. Make sure there are no long scores or scratches.
