Replacing Rear-Axle Bearing (Rear)

→ Do not reach into the danger area.
→ Relieve tension on components before starting work.
→ Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

The procedure for removing and installing is described for one side as an example. The procedure for the other side is practically identical.
Information
The following tools are required for replacing the rear bearing:
- T10263 - Assembly fixture
- T40185 - Assembly fixture
- T40033 - Assembly fixture
- VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder
- 3301 - Assembly fixture
- 3346 - Assembly fixture
- VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack
must be positioned under the rear axle housing -1-
with a suitable piece of wood -2-
underneath.

- Unscrew screws at the rear of the rear axle housing.
- Assembly fixture 3301
must be screwed in by approx. 1.5 cm on the opposite side of the bearing to be replaced. Screw in nut -2-
until the gap -a-
is 4 cm.

- Lever off twist lock -1-
close to the retaining lugs alternately on both sides of the bearing using a screwdriver.

- Pull plastic insert -Arrows-
up and out.

- Mark installation position of the bearing with respect to the rear axle housing -Arrows-

The help of another person is required to hold the tool.
- Fit tools and press bearing out of rear axle housing -3-
.
Tools for pressing out bearings
1 T10263/5 Nut 2 T40185/5 Pressure piece (cut-out facing the bearing) 3 Rear axle housing 4 T40185/6 Support ring (conical side facing upwards, bars engaged in cut-outs on the bearing) 5 T40033/3 Pipe 6 T40033/4 Pressure piece 7 VAS 6178 Hydraulic cylinder 8 T10263/5 Nut 9 T10263/4 Spindle (pin facing downwards) - Align new bearing with the markings on the rear axle housing and fit it.
- Align pressure piece T40185/3
with bearing > Pressure piece T40185/3

- Fit tools and press bearing -4-
into rear axle housing -3-
until the collar is touching the socket of the rear axle housing -3-
without a gap.

- Align twist lock -1-
with the bearing transversely with respect to direction of travel -arrow-
and attach it.
Alignment of bearing
- Fit and tighten screws on rear of rear axle housing.
> Initial tightening 115 Nm
> Final tightening + 90°
- > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack must now be removed.
