Installing Valves

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Oil the valve at the valve stem and push it into the valve guide from the combustion chamber until it is seated fully in the valve seat.
  2. Screw in valve lock -1-  or alternatively, place a rubber plate -2-  underneath.

  3. Replace valve-stem seals.

    > WM, 156356 - REPLACING VALVE-STEM SEALS (R4) 

  4. Install valve springs and valve-spring plates.
    1. 4.1  Assign and insert valve springs and valve-spring plates according to the markings made during removal.
  5. Insert valve keys into the assembly fixture -1-  .
    1. 5.1  Press the spring washer of the assembly fixture -1-  downwards and insert the valve keys -2-  with the narrow end pointing downwards.

    Information 

    The mechanic must practise for use of the assembly cartridge to be effective. Some repetitions must be made to ensure that the valve keys are correctly held in place.

    The spring washer automatically locks the valve keys in place.

    The knurled screw on the assembly cartridge is pushed forward.

  6. Pick up valve keys -1-  using assembly cartridge -2-  .
    1. 6.1  Ensure that the valve keys fit symmetrically and are inserted as far as they will go in the tool.
    2. 6.2  Fit assembly cartridge -2-  centered on the assembly fixture and check installation position of the valve keys -1-  .
    3. 6.3  Press the assembly cartridge against the spring force onto the assembly fixture. When doing so, turn the knurled screw back and forth until the valve keys snap into place. Repeat as required.

  7. Check that the valve keys -1-  are held symmetrically in place in the assembly cartridge.

  8. Place the valve key assembly cartridge onto the cylinder head (same as removal of valve) and position it on the top concave washer.
  9. Press assembly cartridge with lever (assembly bar) down against the valve spring force and keep it pressed. Then, turn the knurled screw back and forth until the valve keys snap into place. Repeat as required. Valve keys

  10. Check that the valve keys are installed correctly.
