Front Wheel Bearing Housing - Repairing Thread

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Threaded bush sticking out of wheel bearing housing. 
  • Brake calliper can become loose. 

    → The contact surface of the brake calliper must be flush with the contact surface of the wheel bearing housing.

    → The brake calliper must not be supported on the threaded bush.

    → There must be NO gap between the brake calliper and wheel bearing housing.

WARNING: Risk of damage or injury from foreign bodies flying around during grinding, drilling and milling 
  • Risk of eye injuries 

    → Wear protective goggles.

Information 

The thread must be clean and free of grease.

  1. Drill out thread.
    1. 1.1 Fit assembly aid -1-  on the intact thread using a fastening screw -3-  .

    2. 1.2 Fit guide sleeve -7-  into assembly aid. Drill out the thread as far as the stop using a threading die holder -6-  and drill bit -1-  .

    3. 1.3 Remove assembly aid.
    4. 1.4 Carefully blow drilling chips out of the bore hole.
  2. Countersink the bore hole.
    1. 2.1 Using the seat miller -2-  , countersink the bore until the stop of the seat miller is seated completely on the wheel bearing housing -LHD vehicle -  .

  3. Check countersink depth.
    1. 3.1 Fit threaded bush -5-  into the bore hole against the screw-in direction. The collar of the threaded bush must be seated up to the first thread in the countersink in the wheel bearing housing -LHD vehicle -  .

  4. Cut thread.
    1. 4.1 Fit assembly aid -1-  using a fastening screw -3-  .

    2. 4.2 Push guide sleeve -8-  onto the tap -3-  . Oil the tap.

    3. 4.3 Insert the tap -3-  into the assembly aid -1-  . The guide sleeve -8-  must project slightly out of the assembly aid. The guide sleeve will drop during the cutting process.

    4. 4.4 Fit threading die holder -6-  . Carefully cut the thread as far as the stop.

    5. 4.5 Remove assembly aid.
    6. 4.6 Carefully blow drilling chips out of the bore hole.
  5. Re-mill the bore hole.
    1. 5.1 Using the seat miller -2-  , countersink the bore again until the stop of the seat miller is seated completely on the wheel bearing housing -LHD vehicle -  .

    2. 5.2 Carefully cut the thread again as far as the stop using the tap. The tap must screw out without catching.
    3. 5.3 Check again that the collar of the threaded bush -5-  has disappeared in the recess. Otherwise, repeat the milling process  .

  6. Carefully blow drilling chips out of the bore hole and clean the thread using brake cleaner.

    Information 

    The collar of the threaded bush must be at least 0.2 mm  under the edge of the wheel bearing housing.

  7. Screw in threaded bush.
    1. 7.1 Screw in the threaded bush as far as possible by hand.
    2. 7.2 Oil the screw-in tool -4-  and screw it in by hand until the threaded bush is sitting slightly deeper in the bore hole on the wheel bearing housing.

    3. 7.3 Continue screwing in the threaded bush using the threading die holder. You will feel increased resistance when the threaded bush is slightly deeper in the bore hole. Continue screwing carefully until there is less resistance again.
    4. 7.4 The screw-in tool -4-  must screw out without catching.
    5. 7.5 The threaded bush -5-  is inserted at the correct position when the collar -Arrows-  is below the contact surface of the wheel bearing housing -LHD vehicle -  .

  8. Rinse the thread with brake cleaner.
