Disassembling Pistons
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CAUTION:
Engine damage due to improper handling of piston rings!
- Engine damage and strain, damage to piston rings
- → Do not overstretch piston rings with the piston ring pliers. Only open up the piston rings until they just fit over the piston.
- → Do not use force to install pistons.
Information
- Compression rings and oil scraper rings are installed and removed differently.
Information
Pistons must not be marked using mechanical tools.
- Mark allocation of piston, connecting rod and cylinder for re-installation using a coloured marker.
- Removing piston pin circlip 1
.
Piston pin circlip
- 2.1 Insert a suitable screwdriver behind the circlip 1 into the cut-out -Arrow- .
- 2.2
Carefully lever piston pin circlip -1-
out of the groove and remove it.
Make sure not to damage the pistons -2- and piston pins -3- .
- 2.3 Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
- Remove connecting rod -1-
Connecting rod
- 3.1
Carefully drive out piston pin -2-
using VW222A - drift
.
If the piston pin -2- is stiff, heat the piston -3- to around 60°C (140°F).
- 3.2 Remove piston pin -2- and connecting rod -1- from the piston -3- .
Information
The holding arms of the piston ring pliers should clasp the compression ring from above.
- 3.1
Carefully drive out piston pin -2-
using VW222A - drift
.
- Removing compression rings -1 and 2-
.
Compression rings
- 4.1 Place the piston on a clean surface and look for the gaps -Arrows- in the compression rings -1 and 2- .
- 4.2 Position piston ring pliers in the gap in the upper compression ring -1- carefully spread it out and remove it by pulling it upwards.
- 4.3 Loosen the piston ring pliers and remove the compression ring -1- from the piston pliers.
- 4.4 Repeat the procedure for the lower compression ring -2- .
- Removing oil scraper ring -1-
.
Oil scraper ring
- 5.1
Removing upper and lower discs.
- 5.1.1 Look for gaps in the oil scraper ring -1- .
- 5.1.2 Fit piston ring pliers in the gap on the upper disc, carefully spread it out and remove it by pulling it upwards.
- 5.1.3 Release the piston ring pliers and remove upper disc from the piston ring pliers.
- 5.1.4 Repeat the procedure for the lower disc.
- 5.2 Open spring at the connection point -Arrow- and remove it.
