Removing Timing Chain

NOTIFICATION
Timing not set correctly
- Risk of engine damage
- Rough running engine
- Loss of engine power
- → Do not use force when fitting the staking tool.
- → Make sure that the gap is equal on both sides.
- → When inserting the staking tools, do not use force to turn the camshafts against any resistance.
- → The engine must be exactly at top dead centre.
- → The opposite cylinder must be at ignition TDC.
Information
An offset from one tooth indicates a deviation from the setpoint value of approx. 6 mm.
If an offset is detected, the timing chain must be re-fitted.
- Remove bearing saddle -1-

- 1.1 Unscrew screws -2- .
- 1.2 Carefully loosen and remove the bearing saddle -1- .

Information
Unless otherwise specified, the engine must not be turned against the running direction of the engine.
- Turn the crankshaft as far as required using a suitable tool until the markings -Arrows-
on the camshaft timing gears are facing upwards.

Once maximum pointer deflection is reached, the piston is at top dead centre (TDC).
- Move cylinder 1 to TDC position.

Prepare
VAS 6079 - Dial gauge-2-
.
- 3.1.1 T10170A - Dial gauge adapter-1- must be screwed fully into the spark plug bore of cylinder 1.
- 3.1.2 Insert VAS 6079 - dial gauge-2- into T10170A - dial gauge adapter-1- and clamp securely with a clamping nut.
- 3.2 Turn the engine slowly in direction of rotation of the engine until maximum deflection of the pointer on the VAS 6079 - dial gauge-2- is reached.

Prepare
VAS 6079 - Dial gauge-2-

- Tighten the chain tensioner.
- 4.1 Unscrew screws -arrows A- .
- 4.2
Insert T40243 - lever-1-
and secure with screws -arrows A-

- 4.2.1 Replace screws.
- 4.3 Press and hold the circlip -2- on the chain tensioner.
- 4.4 Press T40243 - lever-1- slowly in -direction of arrow B- and hold securely.

- Lock chain tensioner -1-
using T40267 - staking tool-2-

must now be removed.
- 6.1 Unscrew screws -arrows A- .
- 6.2 Remove T40243 - lever-1- .
- 6.3
Screw in and tighten new
screws -arrows A-
.
Initial tightening 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)
Final tightening +90°
Special tool for chain tensioner
- Remove upper guide rail -1-
.
- 7.1 Release catch on upper guide rail -1- .
- 7.2 Pull upper guide rail -1- forward and remove it.

- Remove chain tensioner for oil pump -1-

- 8.1 Press clamp in -direction of arrow- and lock it using T40011 - locking pin-3- .
- 8.2 Unscrew guide pin -2- and remove oil pump chain tensioner -1- .

- Loosen the guide and tensioning rail.
- 9.1
Remove guide rail -1-
.
- 9.1.1 Unscrew guide pins -3- .
- 9.1.2 Guide side guide rail -1- down and out.
- 9.2
Loosen tensioning rail -2-
.
- 9.2.1 Unscrew guide pins -4- .
- 9.2.2 Guide tensioning rail -2- downwards and leave it at this position.

- Remove camshaft timing chain.
