Bleeding The Brake System

Information 

  1. Unscrew cap on brake fluid reservoir -Arrow-  .

  2. Connect > VAS 6860 - Brake filling and bleeding device  to reservoir with adapter and switch on.
  3. Set the bleeding pressure to 2, 0 bar.

    Information 

    • To check the escaping brake fluid, ensure absolute cleanliness and make sure there are no air bubbles. 
    • A transparent hose and a collecting bottle must be used to determine the amount of brake fluid used. 
  4. Carry out the bleeding procedure on the brake callipers in the following sequence: rear right/rear left/front right/front left.
    1. 4.1 During the bleeding process, get another person to help by pumping the brake pedal slowly and constantly.
    2. 4.2 Open each bleeder screw in the specified sequence for as long as required until clear, bubble-free brake fluid emerges.

      Then close the bleeder screw again.

    3. 4.3 Tighten rear bleeder screws. 

      > Tightening - torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) 

    4. 4.4 Tighten front bleeder screws. 

      > Tightening - torque 14 Nm (10.5 ftlb.) 

  5. Only when replacing the hydraulic unit:  Bleed the secondary circuit using the PIWIS Tester. 
    1. 5.1 To do this, select PSM in the control unit overview.
      1. 5.1.1 Select the Maintenance/repairs  menu.
      2. 5.1.2 Select the Bleed brakes function and follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester. 
    2. 5.2 Bleed the right-hand side of the vehicle manually again (with the help of another person). Start at the front right wheel.
  6. Pull off breather hose.
  7. Turn off > VAS 6860 - Brake filling and bleeding  device and unscrew the adapter on the reservoir.
  8. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
    1. 8.1 The fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX markings -Arrow-  . Correct the brake fluid level, if necessary.

  9. Close the cap on the reservoir tightly.
  10. Start the engine and create a vacuum in the brake booster. Check brake-pedal travel and pedal feel.
