Removing Rear Axle

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    1. → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
WARNING: Danger of injury and damage from brake fluid! 
  • Poisonous if swallowed! 
  • Irritation and damage to skin 
  • Avoid contact with paint surfaces 
    1. Store brake fluid in suitable, labelled containers only
    2. Wear protective gloves and goggles
    3. In the event of contact (eyes or skin), wash immediately with water
    4. In the event of contact with paint surfaces, wash off immediately with water - do not wipe off
  1. Disconnect brake hose -1-  .

    Brake hose

    1. 1.1 Unscrew union nut -2-  and counter at the brake hose connection -3-  at the same time.
    2. 1.2 Pull brake hose -1-  out of holder -4-  , collect leaking brake fluid and seal line connections with suitable plugs.
  2. Disconnect electric wiring harness -1-  .

    Electric lines on rear axle

    1. 2.1 If installed: 

      Release and disconnect electric plug connection PASM -2-  .

    2. 2.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connections on actuator for electronic parking brake -3-  and brake pad wear indicator -4-  .
    3. 2.3 Release and disconnect electric plug connection and speed sensor -5-  rear.
    4. 2.4 Detach rubber holder -6-  .
    5. 2.5 Release and disconnect electric plug connection rear level sensor -7-  .
    6. 2.6 Move electric wiring harness -1-  aside.
  3. Release locking lugs -1-  and remove stone guard -2-  .

  4. Unscrew screw -2-  and remove washer -1-  .

    Lower shock-absorber mount

  5. Disconnect electric wiring harness for servo motor for rear-differential lock -1-  .

    Electric wiring harness for servo motor for rear-differential lock

    1. 5.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -2-  .
    2. 5.2 Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 5.3 Move electric wiring harness for servo motor for rear-differential lock -1-  aside.
  6. Support rear axle housing.
    1. 6.1 Position > VAS 6931 - transmission and gearbox jack  under the rear final drive using a suitable soft support.
    2. 6.2 Raise > VAS 6931 - transmission and gearbox jack  until it is touching the rear final drive.
    3. 6.3 Secure rear axle housing on the > VAS 6931 - transmission and gearbox jack  using suitable tension straps.

    Information 

    You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

  7. Remove rear axle -1-  .

    Rear axle housing

    1. 7.1 Unscrew screws on rear axle housing -2-  .
    2. 7.2 Lower the rear axle housing -1-  on > VAS 6931 - transmission and gearbox jack  and get a second mechanic to guide it down. Make sure not to damage any electric lines.
