Assembling Drive Shaft

Information 

Always replace the removed joint at least during assembly.

Information 

When fitting the drive shaft boots, make sure not to get them mixed up. (→ They are not identical parts)

1. Fit joint pin. > Positioning joint pin

   1. 1.1 Replace circlips and check that they are seated correctly.
   2. 1.2 Fit both drive shaft boots and flat joiners on the drive shaft.
   3. 1.3 Clamp the drive shaft (use aluminium protective jaws) and position the joint pin flush on the drive shaft. > Positioning joint pin 
   4. 1.4 Fit the joint pin as far as it will go onto the drive shaft using a rubber hammer.

   Information 

   Do not use cleaning agents on the joints (as these have a thinning effect on grease).

   Information 

   • The new grease must be pressed well into the ball tracks of the joint. 
   • Make sure that only a small amount of grease gets into the drive shaft boots.

   Greasing drive shaft (outside)

   Grease the joints with special grease (see Spare Parts Catalogue). The original grease quantities for the individual joints are specified in the table below.

   Joint (on transmission side): Grease the joint using the quantities of grease specified in the table. The complete drive shaft is supplied straight from the factory with the quantities of grease specified in the table. Before sliding on the bellows, remove excess grease. Push the required amount of grease through the joint to the outside. Then, grease the inside of the joint.

3. Assemble tripod joint. > Tripod joint

   Tripod joint

   1. 3.1 Clamp the drive shaft vertically in the vice with the tripod joint facing upwards.
   2. 3.2 Position the tripod bearings flush with the pins by hand.
   3. 3.3 Fit/slide on the tripod bell.

   Information 

   The small flat joiners for the two boots must be fitted between the grooves. If the boots are fitted correctly, the groove -A-  will be visible.

4. Fit drive shaft boots.
   1. 4.1 Make sure that the inner drive shaft boot is seated correctly in the groove of the plastic ring.
   2. 4.2 Fit flat joiners for the two drive shaft boots using the > V.A.G 1682A - clamp tensioner  .
