Replacing Instrument Cluster

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Irreparable damage to control unit 
• Damage to control unit 
• Fault entries in the control unit 
• Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
• Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 
  1. → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.
  2. → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.
  3. → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

1. Document the total mileage and fuel level.
2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
3. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
4. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview.  Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
5. Select Coding/programming. 
6. Select Automatic coding. 
   1. 6.1  The Tester displays the message: Coding completed successfully.
7. Extended identifications  must now be selected.
8. Vehicle identification number  must be selected.
   1. 8.1 Enter the vehicle identification number  and press "Enter" to confirm your entry.
9. Select Maintenance/repairs. 

   Information 

   The total mileage can only be written once in the instrument cluster. It cannot be changed even if the counter is below 1, 000 km (620 mls). An incorrect total mileage cannot be corrected.  Make sure that the total mileage is entered correctly.

10. Select Set total mileage.  Press F12 to continue.

    Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester.

    1. 10.1  Select the total mileage. Enter the value that was read out in Step 1 and press F8 to write data.
    2. 10.2 Total mileage  must be selected. Then enter the value that was read out in Step 1, press "Enter" to confirm your entry and press F8 to write data.
11. Write service interval  must now be selected.
    1. 11.1  Read and follow the instructions and warnings on the Tester.
    2. 11.2  Look up and enter the servicing values from the customer service booklet.
12. Fuel tank calibration  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
    1. 12.1  Read the information on the Tester and press F8 to start.
13. Read out all fault memories  and erase them if necessary.
14. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
15. Check the function of the instrument cluster and fuel level gauge during the test drive.
