(1) Proof stress (yield stress) is the amount of mechanical stress above which a material will extend or buckle irreversibly or deform plastically.

(2) Tensile strength is the resistance of a material to a force tending to tear it apart. If the tensile force is greater than the tensile strength of a body, it will be damaged irreparably.
