Removing Transmission

Information 

  1. Remove struts -1-  .
    1. 1.1 Unscrew screw (M12 x 40) -2-  with washer.
    2. 1.2 Unscrew screw (M12 x 45) -4-  .
    3. 1.3 Only for Cabriolet vehicles:  Unscrew screw (M8 x 25) -5-  .
    4. 1.4 Unscrew screw (M10 x 45) -3-  and remove struts.

    Information 

    • Protect the drive shafts from mechanical damage.
  2. Loosen drive shafts on transmission side.
    1. 2.1 Unscrew and remove screws -Arrows-  between the drive shaft and transmission flange.

      Get another person to counter at the wheel.

    Information 

    • Handle shift and selector cables with care. Do not bend or kink the cables as this can damage them over time.
  3. Loosen shift and selector cables on manual transmission.
    1. 3.1 Lever off ball joints -1-  on the exterior shift mechanism using >VAS 6933 - disassembly tool  .
    2. 3.2 Release shift and selector cables -3-  at the support bracket -2-  and disconnect them.

  4. Disconnect cable plug for temperature sensor on the transmission.
    1. 4.1 Pull out lock on cable plug -1-  (-Arrow-  ).
    2. 4.2 Release and disconnect cable plug -1-  .
    3. 4.3 Remove claw plate holder -2-  .

  5. Disconnect cable plug for reverse gear switch on the transmission.
    1. 5.1 Release and disconnect cable plug -1-  .
    2. 5.2 Remove retaining clip -2-  .

  6. Disconnect cable plug for disc valve and neutral gear sensor on the transmission.
    1. 6.1 Release and disconnect cable plug for neutral gear sensor -1-  .
    2. 6.2 Press holder -3-  together using a pliers and pull it off.
    3. 6.3 Release and disconnect cable plug for disc valve -2-  .
    4. 6.4 Pull off sheetmetal holder -4-  .

  7. Disconnect coolant hoses.

    Hose clamping pliers

    1. 7.1 Clamp off coolant hoses -1 and 2-  using >Nr.192 - hose clamping pliers  (-3 and 4-  ).
    2. 7.2 Place a container under the vehicle to collect coolant.
    3. 7.3 Open spring band clamp -3-  on upper coolant hose -1-  .

      Pull off upper coolant hose -1-  .

    4. 7.4 Open spring band clamp -4-  on lower coolant hose -2-  .

      Pull off lower coolant hose -2-  .

    5. 7.5 Remove holder for coolant hoses.

      1. 7.5.1 Unscrew and remove fastening screw -2-  for the holder -1-  .
    6. 7.6 Set coolant hoses aside.
  8. Loosen disc valve holder.
    1. 8.1 Pull off vacuum line for disc valve -Arrows-  .
    2. 8.2 Unscrew and remove fastening screw -1-  on the disc valve holder.

    Information 

    Make sure that the engine is positioned securely on the transmission jack. To do this, set the correct angle on the transmission jack.

  9. Support the transmission and engine.
    1. 9.1 Support the transmission.
      1. 9.1.1 Position transmission jack -1-  under the transmission.
      2. 9.1.2 Secure the transmission with a restraining strap.
    2. 9.2 Support the engine.
      1. 9.2.1 Position transmission jack -2-  under the engine of the vehicle.

  10. Remove transmission support -6-  and transmission bracket -2-  .
    1. 10.1 Screw off collar nuts -4-  .
    2. 10.2 Unscrew and remove screws -1-  .
    3. 10.3 Remove transmission bracket -2-  .
    4. 10.4 Screw off collar nut -3-  .
    5. 10.5 Remove transmission support -6-  .
    6. 10.6 Replace screws and nuts.

  11. Loosen cable duct for B+ line.
    1. 11.1 Unscrew and remove screws -1-  .
    2. 11.2 Lay cable duct -A -  aside.

  12. Disconnect cable plug for speed sensor -1-  on the transmission.

    Information 

    Do not  disconnect hydraulic line for clutch actuation.

  13. Remove clutch slave cylinder.
    1. 13.1 Disconnect clutch slave cylinder from the transmission.
      1. 13.1.1 Unscrew and remove screws -1-  .
    2. 13.2 Pull clutch slave cylinder out of the mount -Arrow-  .

    NOTE: Mechanical overload of components
    • Component will be damaged irreparably

      → Observe guidelines for assembly and disassembly

    Information 

    Check that the guide sleeves between the transmission flange and engine flange remain in the engine flange.

    NOTE: Engine housing overload.
    • Risk of engine damage if housing breaks.

      → Observe specified loosening and tightening sequence!

      → Loosening sequence: Loosen screws from the bottom up.

      → Tightening sequence: Tighten screws from top to bottom.

  14. Remove transmission.
    1. 14.1 First unscrew and remove the lower screws -1 and 2-  between the transmission flange and engine.
    2. 14.2 Loosen and unscrew the remaining four screws in the following sequence: -6, 3, 5, 4-  .
    3. 14.3 Gradually guide the transmission out towards the front and downwards by lowering the transmission jack.
