Assembling Rear Spring Strut

Information 

Explanation of the coloured dots on the coil spring

• Coloured dots -1-  provide information about the spring variant.
• Coloured dot -2-  indicates the tolerance group.

Coloured dots -1 and 2-  are relevant for positioning the circlip on the vibration damper (see table below).

1. Position circlip -1-  using >VW161A - Circlip pliers  in the relevant groove -A, B, C, D, E-  on the vibration damper -2-  .

2. Fit all remaining components -1 to 14-  on the piston rod.

3. Align supporting mount -as shown-  with the vibration damper.

   Information 

   Make sure that the coil spring is positioned correctly at the upper spring plate -1-  .

4. Clamp spring strut in >VAS 6908 - Stationary Spring Compressor  in such a way that the mounting plates of the spring tensioning device are positioned on the spring strut supporting mount. >Rear spring strut in spring tensioning device

   WARNING: Preloaded or pressurised components 

   • Risk of squashing or bruising 

     → Do not reach into the danger area.

     → Relieve tension on components before starting work.

     → Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

5. Pre-tension the spring strut until the tension on the piston rod is relieved.
6. Tighten nut -1-  using >T10001 - shock absorber set  (>Tightening torque 35 Nm (25.8 ftlb.) + 2 Nm (1.5 ftlb.)  ). Counter at the hexagon -2-  on the piston rod at the same time.

7. Relieve tension on the spring strut (there must be no tension on the coil spring!).
