Installing Rear-Axle Carrier Side Section

  1. Fit rear-axle carrier side section (the help of another person is required).

    Information 

    The wheel suspension is tilted outwards at the top when starting work.

    1. 1.1 Fit upper control arm (front) -2-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

      1. 1.1.1 Position upper control arm (front) -2-  and screw -1-  in installation position.
    2. 1.2 Fit tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -2-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

      Mounting for servo motor for rear axle steering on the rear-axle carrier side section

      1. 1.2.1 Move tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -2-  and eccentric screw -1-  into installation position.
  2. Fit rear-axle carrier side section.
    1. 2.1 Move rear-axle carrier side section into installation position.
    2. 2.2 Tighten screws -2-  on the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  . >Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180° 
    3. 2.3 Tighten nut -3-  on the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  . >Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90° 

      If stud on -item 3-  was loosened, this must be tightened beforehand. >Tightening torque 30 Nm (22.1 ftlb.)

  3. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 

      → Wear personal protective gear.

      → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

    1. 3.1 Lift the wheel bearing housing as far as required using lifting equipment (e.g. >VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  ) until the lower trailing arm is horizontal. >Zero position of rear axle

    2. 3.2 Secure upper control arm (front) -1-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

      Mounting for upper control arm (front)

      1. 3.2.1 Tighten threaded joint -3-  . >Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening angle + 180° 
    3. 3.3 Fit upper control arm (rear) -1-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

      Mounting for upper control arm (rear)

      1. 3.3.1 Tighten threaded joint -3-  on the rear-axle carrier side section. >Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 180° 
    4. 3.4 Secure tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -1-  on rear-axle carrier side section.

      Mounting for servo motor for rear axle steering on rear-axle carrier side section

      1. 3.4.1 Align eccentric position -2-  according to the marking.
      2. 3.4.2 Tighten nut -3-  . >Tightening torque 100 Nm (73.8 ftlb.) 
  4. Only for vehicles with rear axle steering  : Secure wire harness for rear axle steering -1-  on the holder -2-  .

  5. Fit holder for angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment -1-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 5.1 Tighten screw -2-  . >Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.) 
  6. Fit the drive shaft -1-  on the transmission flange.

    1. 6.1 Fit plates and tighten screws -2-  (turn the drive shaft in order to access the screws). >Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.5 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 110°
