Installing Wheel Bearing Housing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Fit (rear) upper control arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for upper control arm (rear)

    1. 1.1  Screw in screw -2-  as far as it will go (do not tighten!).
  2. Fit (front) upper control arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for upper control arm (front)

    1. 2.1  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go (do not tighten!).
  3. Fit tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for servo motor for rear axle steering on wheel bearing housing

    1. 3.1  Screw in screw -2-  as far as it will go (do not tighten!).
  4. Fit rear spring strut -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 4.1  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go (do not tighten!).
  5. Fit control arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 5.1  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go (do not tighten!).
  6. Fit trailing arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for trailing arm

    1. 6.1  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go (do not tighten!).
  7. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 

      → Wear personal protective gear.

      → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

    1. 7.1  Lift the wheel bearing housing as far as required using lifting equipment (e.g. > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack)  until the lower trailing arm is horizontal. > Zero position of rear axle

    2. 7.2  Tighten screw -2-  on the wheel bearing housing. > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44.3 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 90°

      Mounting for upper control arm (rear)

    3. 7.3  Tighten threaded joint securing upper control arm (at the front) to wheel bearing housing -2-  . > Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180°

    4. 7.4  Tighten screw -2-  .

      Tie rod to wheel bearing housing: > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44.3 ftlb.  ) > Final tightening torque angle + 90° 

      Servo motor for rear axle steering to wheel bearing housing: > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90°

    5. 7.5  Tighten threaded joint securing rear spring strut to wheel bearing housing -2-  > Tightening torque 110 Nm (81.1 ftlb.)

    6. 7.6  Tighten threaded joint securing control arm to wheel bearing housing -2-  . > Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.  ) > Final tightening + 180°

    7. 7.7  Tighten threaded joint securing trailing arm to wheel bearing housing -2-  . > Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180°

  8. Fit connecting link -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for connecting link (PDCC)

    1. 8.1 Conventional connecting link:  Tighten nut -3-  . > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 40° 
    2. 8.2 PDCC connecting link:  Tighten threaded joint -3-  . > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)  > Final tightening angle + 50 (37 ftlb.) ° 
  9. Fit wiring harness holder -1-  .

    Mounting for wiring harness holder

    1. 9.1  Tighten screws -2-  . > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.4 ftlb.) 
  10. Install brake disc cover plate -3-  .
    1. 10.1  Fit brake disc cover plate -3-  .
    2. 10.2  Screw in screws on brake disc cover plate -1 and 2-  by hand.
    3. 10.3  Tighten screws on brake disc cover plate -1-  .

      > Initial tightening 4 Nm (2.9 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening + 45 (33 ftlb.) ° 

    4. 10.4  Tighten screws on brake disc cover plate -2-  .

      > Initial tightening 4 Nm (2.9 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening + 45 (33 ftlb.) °
