Installing Drive Shaft
Information
Make sure that the drive shaft does not hang down as this may damage the joint.
- On used and new drive shafts, clean the bores -2-
on the inner flange -1-
with a cloth soaked in brake cleaner.

- Grease drive shaft splines with Molub Alloy Paste TA. > Drive shaft splines
The threading must not be greased!
Drive shaft splines
- Position drive shaft in installation position and pull it into the wheel hub with the old nut initially.
- Attach drive shaft -1-
at the transmission flange.

- 4.1 Replace new screws and plates.
- 4.2
Tighten screws -2-
(with plates). (Turn the drive shaft so that the screws are accessible).
> Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.5 ftlb. ) > Final tightening torque angle + 110° Tightening method for securing drive shaft to wheel hub after re-using drive shaft:
- Tighten new hex nut -1-
using > VAS 6942 - torque - angle - spanner 20-400 Nm (15-295 ftlb.)
and >
9471 - socket spanner
.
Another person is needed in order to actuate the service brake.
Circlip - Drive shaft to wheel hub
- 5.1 Initial tightening of new lock nut:
> Initial tightening torque 120 Nm (88.5 ftlb.
)
> Final tightening rotation angle + 120°
Tightening procedure for securing drive shaft to wheel hub after replacing drive shaft:
- 5.1 Initial tightening of new lock nut:
> Initial tightening torque 120 Nm (88.5 ftlb.
)
> Final tightening rotation angle + 120°
- Secure drive shaft to wheel hub.
Another person is needed in order to actuate the service brake.
Tighten new nut in steps using > VAS 6942 - torque - angle - spanner 20-400 Nm (15-295 ftlb.) .
- 6.1 Fit new nut -1- .

Tighten nut -1-
in steps.
Nut securing drive shaft to wheel hub
For vehicles with central wheel bolt, use > 9471 - socket wrench .
Wheel hub on central bolt
- 6.2.1 Initial tightening: > 1. Step 260 Nm (191.8 ftlb.)
- 6.2.2 Torque angle: > 2. Step + 120°
- 6.2.3 Loosen nut: > 3. Step - 360°
- 6.2.4 2. Initial tightening: > 4. Step 120 Nm (88.5 ftlb.)
- 6.2.5 Final tightening torque angle: > 5. Step + 120°
