Removing Pistons - Cylinders 4-6

> 9779 - Holding bridge-1- must now be installed.

Holding bridge 9779 for crankshaft

> 9779 - Fit retaining bridge-1- on centre main bearing

Screw in screws -2- as far as they will go by hand.
Mark installation position of the pistons -4 to 6- with a touch-up stick.

Pistons 4 to 6
Turn the crank shaft in position.

Crankshaft (without vibration damper)

Screw in screws -2- by hand.

> 9773 - Fit turning device-1- and turn the crankshaft in such a way that the threaded joint of the connecting-rod bearing cover is accessible.
Remove piston 4 and connecting rod.

Connecting rod cap screws

Unscrew screws on connecting-rod bearing cap -1- .

Remove connecting-rod bearing cap -2- and bearing shell.

Unscrew the grip of the > 9783 - assembly aid-2- and screw the bar into a threaded bore on the connecting rod -1- .

Press piston 4 with connecting rod down out of the cylinder bore.

Piston with connecting rod

Store the piston together with the connecting-rod bearing cap and bearing shell so that they cannot get mixed up.

Repeat these steps for pistons 5 and 6.
Unscrew screws -2- , remove connecting rod cap and connecting -1- rods for cylinders 1 to 3.

> 9773 - Remove the turning device-1- and unscrew screws -2- .

Turning the crankshaft (without vibration damper)
Remove the sealing rings for crankshaft on the transmission and belt side.
> Replacing crankshaft sealing ring - transmission side .

Remove crankshaft with timing chains from crankcase half for cylinder bank 2. > Crankshaft with timing chains in crankcase half for cylinder bank 2

Remove bearing shells from crankcase halves and dispose of them.

Remove O-ring from crankcase half for cylinder bank 2 and dispose of it.

Clean the crankcase and sealing faces.

If the piston or connecting rod is to be replaced:
Insert connecting rod -1- with piston into > 9778 - retaining device-2- with retaining device (can be used for pistons with a diameter of 102 mm).

Remove piston-pin circlip using > 9764 - disassembly tool .

Press out piston pin and place it with the relevant piston to avoid confusion.
If the pistons are to be re-installed:
Check piston for wear.
