Assembling Rear Spring Strut
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
Information
Explanation of the colored dots on the coil spring
- Colored dots -1- provide information about the spring variant.
- Colored dot -2- indicates the tolerance group.
Colored dots -1 and 2- are relevant for positioning the circlip on the vibration damper (see table below).

- Position circlip -1-
using > VW161A - Circlip pliers
in the relevant groove -A, B, C, D, E-
on the vibration damper -2-

Information
Make sure that the coil spring is positioned correctly at the upper spring plate -1- .
Position of coil spring
- Clamp spring strut in > VAS 6908 - Stationary Spring Compressor
in such a way that the mounting plates of the spring tensioning device are positioned on the spring strut supporting mount. > Rear spring strut in spring tensioning device
Rear spring strut in spring tensioning device
WARNING: Preloaded or pressurized components- Risk of squashing or bruising
→ Do not reach into the danger area.
→ Relieve tension on components before starting work.
→ Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.
- Risk of squashing or bruising
- Pre-tension the spring strut until the tension on the piston rod is relieved.
- Tighten nut -1-
using > T10001 - shock absorber set
(> Tightening torque 35 Nm (25.8 ftlb.) + 2 Nm (1.5 ftlb.)
). Counter at the hexagon -2-
on the piston rod at the same time.
Rear spring strut
- Relieve tension on the spring strut (there must be no tension on the coil spring!).
