Removing Rear-Axle Carrier Side Section

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Change into neutral gear.
  3. Remove the drive shaft -1-  from the transmission flange.

    1. 3.1 Unscrew screws -2-  and remove plates (turn the drive shaft in order to access the screws).

      Information 

      Make sure that the drive shaft does not hang down as this may damage the joint.

    2. 3.2 Suspend drive shaft on the spring strut.
  4. Remove holder for angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment -1-  from the rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 4.1 Unscrew screw -2-  and remove holder for angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment.
  5. Only for vehicles with rear axle steering:  Disconnect wire harness for rear axle steering -1-  from the holder -2-  .

  6. Loosen mounting for tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -1-  on rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 6.1 Mark eccentric position -2-  for installation.
    2. 6.2 Unscrew nut -3-  . (Screw -2-  remains screwed in).
  7. Loosen threaded joint -3-  securing upper control arm (front) to rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 7.1 Unscrew nut. (Screw remains screwed in).
  8. Remove upper control arm (rear) -1-  from the rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 8.1 Loosen threaded joint -3-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.
  9. Tilt wheel suspension outwards at the top so that the screws can be removed from the tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering and upper control arm (front) (the help of another person is required).
    1. 9.1 Unscrew screws -2-  from the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  .
    2. 9.2 Unscrew nut -3-  from the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  .

    3. 9.3 Carefully tilt wheel suspension outwards as far as required at the top -arrow A-  so that the screw on the tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -1-  and upper control arm (front) -2-  can be removed.

  10. Remove rear-axle carrier side section (the help of another person is required).
    1. 10.1 Remove screw -1-  from tie rod/servo motor for rear axle steering -2-  .

    2. 10.2 Remove screw -1-  from upper control arm (front) -2-  .

    3. 10.3 Remove rear-axle carrier side section and secure wheel suspension at a suitable place (e.g. spring strut) to prevent it from tilting.
