Installing Tie Rod

Information 

The wheel suspension is tilted outwards at the top when starting work.

  1. Fit tie rod -2-  on the rear-axle carrier side section.

    1. 1.1 Move tie rod -2-  and eccentric screw -1-  into installation position.
  2. Fit rear-axle carrier side section.
    1. 2.1 Move rear-axle carrier side section into installation position.
    2. 2.2 Tighten screws -2-  on the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  . > Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180° 
    3. 2.3 Tighten nut -3-  on the rear-axle carrier side section -1-  . > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90° 

    If stud on -item 3-  was loosened, this must be tightened beforehand. > Tightening torque 30 Nm (22.1 ftlb.)

  3. Fit tie rod -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 3.1 Screw in screw -2-  as far as it will go (do not tighten!).
  4. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 

      → Wear personal protective gear.

      → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

    1. 4.1 Lift the wheel bearing housing as far as required using lifting equipment (e.g. > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  ) until the lower trailing arm is horizontal. > Zero position of rear axle

    2. 4.2 Align eccentric position -2-  according to the marking and tighten nut -3-  securing servo motor for rear axle steering to rear axle carrier side section. > Tightening torque 100 Nm (73.8 ftlb.)

    3. 4.3 Tighten screw -2-  securing servo motor for rear axle steering to wheel bearing housing. > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44.3 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 90°

  5. Fit the drive shaft -1-  on the transmission flange.

    1. 5.1 Fit plates and tighten screws -2-  (turn the drive shaft in order to access the screws). > Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.5 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 110°
