Disassembling Front Spring Strut

Recommendation for workshops replacing shock absorbers/spring dampers:

Information 

If the coil spring is replaced: Always replace coil springs in pairs only!

  1. Clamp the spring strut in > VAS 6908 - stationary spring tensioning device  in such a way that the mounting plates of the spring tensioning device are positioned on the spring strut supporting mount. > Front spring strut in spring tensioning device

    WARNING: Preloaded or pressurized components 
    • Risk of squashing or bruising 

      → Do not reach into the danger area.

      → Relieve tension on components before starting work.

      → Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

  2. Pre-tension the spring strut until the tension on the piston rod is relieved.
  3. Loosen hex nut -1-  using a commercially available open socket-spanner insert (a/f 21 mm), for example Hazet, number 2593  .

    Front spring strut

    1. 3.1 Screw off hexagon nut.
  4. Relieve tension on the spring strut; there must be no tension on the coil spring.
  5. Remove all components -1 to 14-  from the piston rod.

  6. Only for vehicles with front axle lift system:  Remove actuator from the vibration damper.
    1. 6.1 Carefully remove stop cap -1-  using a screwdriver.

      The stop cap must be replaced.

    2. 6.2 Press the actuator off the vibration damper as shown > Pressing off actuator (shown as an example)  .
