Lowering The Engine

  • Risk of squashing or crushing

    → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

  1. Pull off oil filler hose on oil filler neck -1-  at the left by opening the spring band clamp -3-  .

  2. Pull off coolant hose -1-  at the left-hand side of the engine compartment.

    Remove spring clamp -2-  and pull off the coolant hose.

    Close off opening using a stopper and re-fit spring clamp.

    Check O-ring and replace it if necessary.

  3. Open supply connecting lines for engine cooling and heating -2-  .

    Open plug-in couplings -1-  by pulling the spring clamps into unlocking position and disconnect plug-in couplings.

    Clip in spring clamps again.

  4. Disconnect vent lines -1-  at the coolant reservoir.

  5. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  in the engine compartment at the right and vacuum lines -3-  .

    Remove spring clamp -2-  and pull off the coolant hose.

    Close off opening using a suitable stopper. Re-fit spring clamp.

    Check O-ring and replace it if necessary.

  6. Open retaining clip -1-  for fuel line and tank vent line and unclip the lines.

  7. Unclip differential pressure sensor -1-  in the engine compartment at the left and right -Arrows-  .

  8. Disconnect cable plugs -1 and 3-  on oxygen sensors downstream of catalytic converter in the engine compartment and expose cables -2 and 4-  .

  9. Loosen exhaust temperature sensor control unit -1-  and wiring harness -2-  .

    Loosen exhaust temperature sensor control unit from holder.

    Loosen wiring harness -3-  from the holders -4-  .

    Expose wiring harness.

  10. Disconnect cable plug -1-  on the exhaust flap adjuster -2-  .

  11. Remove cover -2-  on engine control unit.

    Unscrew nuts -1-  and remove cover.

  12. Disconnect engine wire harness at the engine control unit (DME) -1-  .

    Release and disconnect the front three cable plugs -2-  on the engine control unit.

    The cable plugs are colour-coded and their position on the control unit is indicated by coloured dots.

  13. Release and disconnect cable plug for engine wire harness -1-  in the engine compartment at the right.

  14. Loosen trailing arm -1-  on both sides of the outer wheel carrier.

    Unscrew outer threaded joint -2-  and counter at the screw.

    Replace screws and nuts.

  15. Loosen and lower the rear axle carrier -1-  .

    You will need the help of a second person in order to remove the rear axle carrier. 

    > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  must be positioned under the rear axle carrier.

    Uncrew and remove screws -2 and 3-  .

    Lower the rear axle carrier with anti-roll bar and secure it with tie-wraps.

    Replace screws.

  16. Release and disconnect cable plug on electronic adjuster for turbocharger.
  17. Disconnect intake manifold -1-  and moulded hose -4-  from the intake air line and turbocharger on the left and right.

    Loosen V-band clamp -2-  . Right side only:  Loosen vent line -3-  and pull off intake pipe.

    Undo screw-type clamp -5-  and remove moulded hose.

    Information 

    There are two ways of lowering the engine

    • Lower the engine by 50 to 60 mm (You can use a lifting platform, see Step 18.1) 
    • Lower the engine by 90 to 100 mm (You cannot use a lifting platform, see Step 18.2) 
  18. Lower the engine.

    Lower the engine by 50 to 60 mm (using > 9959 - lowering tool  ).

    1. 18.1.1  Support the engine using > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  and > 9769 - retainer plate  .
    2. 18.1.2  Unscrew screws -2-  securing engine mount -1-  to engine bracket.

    3. 18.1.3  Carefully lower the engine by approx. 50 to 60 mm -dimension A-  . Raise and lower it as required in order to align it so that the > 9959 - lowering tool  can be fitted

    4. 18.1.4 > 9959 - Lowering tool-2-  must be installed using screws -1 and 3-  .

    Lower the engine by 90 to 100 mm (without lowering tool)  .

    1. 18.2.1  Drain refrigerant from the air-conditioning system.

    2. 18.2.2  Disconnect air-conditioning lines, close off using stoppers and set them aside.

      Item -1-:

      Item -2-  :

      874319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR-CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR - CONDENSER REFRIGERANT LINE (SECTION FROM AIR-CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR TO ENGINE COMPARTMENT CONNECTION POINT) - on "Removal"

      Unscrew screws -3 and 4-  at the connection point and close off the lines

    3. 18.2.3 For vehicles with PDCC:  Loosen holder -1-  for hydraulic lines on both sides. Unscrew two M6 fastening screws -2-  .

      Information 

      • It may only be supported over a large area at the oil pan. 
      • Localised loading is not permitted. 
    4. 18.2.4  > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  and > VAS 6867 - Mounting Plate  must be supported on the oil pan.
    5. 18.2.5  Unscrew screws -2-  securing engine mount -1-  to engine bracket.

      Information 

      Make sure that the engine is positioned securely on the transmission jack. To do this, set the correct angle on the transmission jack.

    6. 18.2.6  Carefully lower the engine by 90 to 100 mm. Dimension -A-  is 195 mm.
