Installing Front Wheel Bearing

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Read specific safety information for the press.

    → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

CAUTION: Hot components 
  • Risk of burns 

    → Let hot components cool down.

    → Wear personal protective gear.

Clean the wheel bearing and bore in the wheel bearing housing. Remove any edges with a polishing cloth.

  2. Heat the wheel bearing housing using a hotplate -2-  to > Temperature 80°C  .

    Heating wheel bearing housing

    Information 

    • The multipole seal on the wheel bearing must not come into contact with highly magnetic tools. 
    • Installing the wheel bearing: The magnetic side must be facing the speed sensor (inside of wheel bearing housing). 
    • Use the  > T10473 - sensor gauge or a paper clip to find the magnetic side. 
  3. Press in wheel bearing.

    Pressing in wheel bearing

    1  > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve 
    2  > T10450 - Pressure piece 
    3  Pressure piece T10205/10 
    1. 3.1 > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve-1-  together with the inserted > T10450 - pressure piece-2-  must be positioned under the workshop press.

      Place the wheel bearing housing flat on the > T10450 - pressure piece-2-  .

    2. 3.2  Insert wheel bearing straight and at the correct position. Fit the pressure piece T10205/10 -3-  flush on the wheel bearing.

      Carefully press the wheel bearing in as far as it will go (check pressure gauge! When the pressure increases rapidly, the wheel bearing is in installation position).

  4. Fit retainer plate -1-  for wheel bearing at the wheel bearing housing (water drains pointing downwards).

    1. 4.1  Tighten screws -2-  . > Tightening torque 37 Nm (27 ftlb.) 
  5. Press in wheel hub.

    Pressing in wheel hub

    1  > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve 
    2  > 30-205 - Pressure piece 
    3  Pressure piece T10205/10 
    1. 5.1 > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve-1-  with inserted > 30-205 - pressure piece-2-  must be positioned under the workshop press.

      Fit the wheel bearing housing and wheel bearing inner race flat on the > 9694/3 - press-on sleeve-1-  or on the > 30-205 - pressure piece-2-  .

      Centre the wheel bearing inner race on the > 30-205 - pressure piece-2-  .

    2. 5.2  Pressure piece T10205/10 -3-  must be positioned flat on the wheel hub. Make sure that the wheel bearing inner race is positioned flat and centered on the > 9694/3 - press-on sleeve-1-  and on the > 30-205 - pressure piece-2-  .

      Carefully press in the wheel hub until the pressure increases (check pressure gauge) -direction arrow-  .
