Removing Front-Axle Cross Member
- Danger of scalding
→ Let the fluid cool down.
→ Wear personal protective gear.
- Danger of chemical burns
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Ensure that there is good ventilation.
→ Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
→ If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.
Information
The front-axle cross member is removed together with the following components:
Front-axle cross member
- Power-steering gear including wire harness
- Anti-roll bar
- trailing arm
- Additional coolant pump (only for all-wheel drive vehicles)
- Sections of the coolant lines and vent lines
- RDK control unit
- Angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment
Information
Only use steering-wheel holders that do rot project into the airbag unit area. Shorten the guide rod of the steering-wheel holder at the top if necessary.
- Clamp steering wheel in center position using steering-wheel holder. > Steering wheel holder

- Remove lower trailing arm -1-
on both sides of the vehicle from the wheel bearing housing.

- Remove connecting link for anti-roll bar -1-
on both sides of the vehicle from the anti-roll bar.

- 3.1 Unscrew nut -2- and counter at the articulated bolt on the connecting link.
- Remove bottom joint -1-
from power-steering gear -2-

- 4.1 Unscrew screw -3- .
- Remove restraining straps -1-

- 5.1 Unscrew and remove screws -2- .
- 5.2 Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles: Loosen bracket -3- for electric wire harness.
- 5.3 Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles: Release and disconnect electric plug connection -4- from additional coolant pump.
- 5.4 Disengage restraining straps on the front-axle cross member -5- and remove them.
- Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:
Remove coolant lines -1-
from the all-wheel final drive.

- 6.1 Have coolant collection container ready.
- 6.2 Release and pull off quick connectors -2- .
- Loosen coolant lines -1-
and vent line -2-
on both sides of the vehicle at the connection point in the wheel housing.

- 7.1 Have coolant collection container ready.
- 7.2 Unscrew screw -4- and remove holder -3- .
- 7.3 Release and pull off quick connectors -5 and 6- .
- Expose wire harness in left wheel housing -1-

- 8.1 Unscrew nut -2- on the ground line.
- 8.2 Loosen electric plug connection -3- from the bracket.
- 8.3 Release and unplug electric plug connection -3- .
- 8.4 Loosen electric plug connection and line -4- from all remaining brackets.
- 8.5 Release and unplug electric plug connection -4- .
- Loosen coolant lines -1-
and vent line -2-
on both sides of the vehicle at the connection point in front of the tunnel.

- 9.1 Have coolant collection container ready.
- 9.2 Release and pull off quick connectors -3 and 4- .
- Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-
from angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment on both sides of the vehicle.

- Expose wire harness at the left -1-

- 11.1 Release and unplug electric plug connection -2- .
- 11.2 Loosen PDCC wire harness from the brackets -3- .
- Expose wire harness at the right -1-

- 12.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection -2- from the TPM control unit -3- .
- 12.2 For TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) 315 MHz (M-no. 7K4):
Loosen wire harness from bracket -4-

For TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) 433 MHz (M-no. 7K3): Loosen wire harness from bracket -5- .
- Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:
Remove bracket for all-wheel final drive -1-
from the front-axle cross member.

- 13.1 Carefully support all-wheel final drive at the front using > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack .
- 13.2 Unscrew nuts -2- .
- 13.3 Unscrew studs -3- .
- Remove front-axle cross member.
- 14.1 Support front-axle cross member with > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack .

Remove longitudinal struts -1-

- 14.2.1 Unscrew and remove screws -2 to 4-

Loosen threaded joints -2 to 5-
on front-axle cross member.
