Removing Front-Axle Cross Member

WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 

    → Let the fluid cool down.

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Ensure that there is good ventilation.

    → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

    → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

Information 

The front-axle cross member is removed together with the following components:

Information 

Only use steering-wheel holders that do rot project into the airbag unit area. Shorten the guide rod of the steering-wheel holder at the top if necessary.

  1. Clamp steering wheel in center position using steering-wheel holder. > Steering wheel holder

  2. Remove lower trailing arm -1-  on both sides of the vehicle from the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 2.1  Screw off nut -2-  .
    2. 2.2  Press off lower trailing arm using > 9560 - press-out tool -1-  .

  3. Remove connecting link for anti-roll bar -1-  on both sides of the vehicle from the anti-roll bar.

    1. 3.1  Unscrew nut -2-  and counter at the articulated bolt on the connecting link.
  4. Remove bottom joint -1-  from power-steering gear -2-  .

    1. 4.1  Unscrew screw -3-  .
  5. Remove restraining straps -1-  .

    1. 5.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 5.2 Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:  Loosen bracket -3-  for electric wire harness.
    3. 5.3 Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -4-  from additional coolant pump.
    4. 5.4  Disengage restraining straps on the front-axle cross member -5-  and remove them.
  6. Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:  Remove coolant lines -1-  from the all-wheel final drive.

    1. 6.1  Have coolant collection container ready.
    2. 6.2  Release and pull off quick connectors -2-  .
  7. Loosen coolant lines -1-  and vent line -2-  on both sides of the vehicle at the connection point in the wheel housing.

    1. 7.1  Have coolant collection container ready.
    2. 7.2  Unscrew screw -4-  and remove holder -3-  .
    3. 7.3  Release and pull off quick connectors -5 and 6-  .
  8. Expose wire harness in left wheel housing -1-  .

    1. 8.1  Unscrew nut -2-  on the ground line.
    2. 8.2  Loosen electric plug connection -3-  from the bracket.
    3. 8.3  Release and unplug electric plug connection -3-  .
    4. 8.4  Loosen electric plug connection and line -4-  from all remaining brackets.
    5. 8.5  Release and unplug electric plug connection -4-  .
  9. Loosen coolant lines -1-  and vent line -2-  on both sides of the vehicle at the connection point in front of the tunnel.

    1. 9.1  Have coolant collection container ready.
    2. 9.2  Release and pull off quick connectors -3 and 4-  .
  10. Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  from angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment on both sides of the vehicle.

  11. Expose wire harness at the left -1-  .

    1. 11.1  Release and unplug electric plug connection -2-  .
    2. 11.2  Loosen PDCC wire harness from the brackets -3-  .
  12. Expose wire harness at the right -1-  .

    1. 12.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -2-  from the TPM control unit -3-  .
    2. 12.2 For TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) 315 MHz (M-no. 7K4):  Loosen wire harness from bracket -4-  .

      For TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring) 433 MHz (M-no. 7K3):  Loosen wire harness from bracket -5-  .

  13. Applies only to all-wheel drive vehicles:  Remove bracket for all-wheel final drive -1-  from the front-axle cross member.

    1. 13.1  Carefully support all-wheel final drive at the front using > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  .
    2. 13.2  Unscrew nuts -2-  .
    3. 13.3  Unscrew studs -3-  .
  14. Remove front-axle cross member.
    1. 14.1  Support front-axle cross member with > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  .
    2. 14.2  Remove longitudinal struts -1-  .

      1. 14.2.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2 to 4- 
    3. 14.3  Loosen threaded joints -2 to 5-  on front-axle cross member.

    4. 14.4  Carefully lower the front-axle carrier.
