Installing Flywheel

NOTE: Removing and installing flywheel 
  • Leaks 
  • Risk of damage to the flywheel and adjacent components 

    → Be very careful during removal and installation.

    → See Technical Information releases about the flywheel.

WARNING: Caustic fluids 
  • Danger of chemical burns 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Ensure that there is good ventilation.

    → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

    → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

  1. Remove protective wax on new parts using acetone or cleaning solvent.
  2. Screw in two > 9321/2 - centering pins-1-  (fine thread) on the crankshaft flange.

    Recommendation: Screw in one centering pin next to the dowel pin!

    Information 

    Before re-installing the flywheel, clean the friction surface of the flywheel using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in acetone or solvent naphtha).

  3. Fit flywheel -1-  over the centering pins -2-  at the dowel pin on the crankshaft and push it onto the crankshaft flange.

    Fit new M10 x 29 (multiple-tooth) fastening screws and tighten uniformly and in diagonally opposite sequence.

    Information 

    • The flywheel screws are micro-self-locking and must be replaced. 
  4. Tighten screws uniformly and in diagonally opposite sequence to the prescribed tightening torque.

    Tool recommendation:  > VAS 6942 - Torque/- torque angle - key, 20-400 Nm (15-296 ftlb  ).

    > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44 ftlb.) 

    > Final tightening torque angle 90°

    Information 

    • After removing, installing or replacing the flywheel, perform the "Reset sensor wheel (flywheel) adaptation" function using the PIWIS Tester. 
    • To actively teach the adaptation, perform an adaptation drive together with another person.
