Removing Wheel With Central Bolt
- Damage to the rim and brake cover plate
- Undesired loosening of or damage to balancing weights
- Do not tilt wheel during removal/fitting from/on the wheel hub.

Information
Removing/fitting wheels without touching the ground
- When fitting all wheels, the vehicle must never be standing on the ground (make sure the wheels are not touching the ground!).
- Otherwise, the wheels cannot be fitted correctly because of the weight of the vehicle!

- Release tool for removing the hub cap is available in the Parts Information.
- Alternatively, the release tool in luggage compartment can be used.
- Carefully lever off the hub cap using the release tool.
Removing hub cap with release tool
- 1.1 Insert the metal tab into the opening groove on the central bolt and swivel back the handle -Arrow- .
- Insert > 9796 - socket wrench
on the central lock to unlock the lockable wheel bolt.
Positioning the tool correctly
- 2.1 The > 9796 - socket wrench must be positioned and pressed on until it engages with an audible click > Positioning the tool correctly.
- 2.2
If the lockable wheel bolt is difficult to move in the axial direction (becomes tilted in the central wheel bolt toothing/socket cannot be fitted), loosen the locking mechanism using a suitable plastic mandrel (press towards wheel hub).

- When loosening the central bolt, make sure that the tool remains fully engaged and does not slide off even slightly (risk of damage to the lockable wheel bolt/locking mechanism).
- Loosen central bolt using > 9796 - socket wrench
and > V.A.G 1601 - torque wrench

A helper must press the brake pedal forcefully and hold the steering wheel firmly!
Loosening central bolt (turning anti-clockwise)
- As soon as possible, unscrew the central bolt by hand using > 9796 - socket wrench
and set it down in such a way that no dirt can get onto the conical surface or the trapezoidal thread.
The tool must remain fully inserted until the central bolt is removed!
- On vehicles with PCCB brake discs, screw > 9794 - assembly aid -1-
into the wheel hub. This prevents damage to the brake disc when removing the wheel.
Assembly aid (hub extension)
- Remove the wheel carefully.
Use a > VAS 6266A - wheel fitting trolley on the rear axle to prevent damage to the rim and brake cover plate!
- After removing the wheel, check whether the cone ring and circlip -1-
have become detached from the central wheel lock and are still in the hub centering bore.
Due to the adhesive effect of the lubricant, there is a possibility that these components will become detached when removing the central wheel lock.

- Visually inspect the components.
Thoroughly remove old lubricant and dirt!
Checking rim and central wheel lock
- 8.1 Check contact surfaces:
- Contact surface of wheel -1- , conical seating of wheel -2-
- Contact surface of brake disc -3- , driver pin -4- , wheel hub -5-
- Cone ring of central bolt -6-
Uniform wear marks and dark abrasion are normal and not important.
Carefully remove dirt from the components before re-installing them!
Components that are worn down, porous or have badly scratched surfaces must be replaced!

A circlip holds the cone ring in the central bolt.
- 8.1 Check contact surfaces:
- Function test on locking mechanism and cone ring:
- 9.1 Check that the components are fitted securely.
- 9.2 Check locking mechanism function:
Locking mechanism function
- Press the locking pin of the locking mechanism approx. 10 mm into the central bolt. When released, the locking pin must snap back automatically -Figure 2- .
- If this is not the case -Figure 1- , turn the locking mechanism on the inside by approx. 1° to 2°. The pin should then snap back.
- If the locking mechanism still sticks => Replace central wheel lock!
- It must be possible to turn the locking mechanism (inside) clockwise (audible click), but not anticlockwise!
- 9.3 Twist test on cone ring:
The cone ring -1- must turn in both directions with no great resistance or jolting -Arrows- !

- 9.4 If this is not the case, disassemble the central wheel lock.
- Check rim and rear brake cover plate.
- 10.1 Check inner part of rim for damage through the brake cover plate.
- 10.2 Check that the balancing weights are fitted and secured correctly.
- 10.3 Check brake cover plate for damage (kinks, dents, distortion, distance to brake disc).
