Installing Wheel With Central Bolt

Removing/fitting wheels without touching the ground
- When fitting all wheels, the vehicle must never be standing on the ground (make sure the wheels are not touching the ground!).
- Otherwise, the wheels cannot be fitted correctly because of the weight of the vehicle!
Information
- Use only Molub Alloy Paste (Part number for 100-gram tube 000.043.305.08) as lubricant for the central wheel lock and wheel hub.
- Before fitting the wheel, grease the wheel hub with the prescribed lubricant as follows.

- 1.1 Grease the outer front area (as far as the red marking -arrow -1 ) with a thin layer of approx. 10 - 20 mm of Molub Alloy paste.

At the front of the inner thread -arrow 2-
, apply a "pea-sized amount"
of Molub Alloy paste.

A circlip holds the cone ring in the central bolt.
- Before fitting the wheel, always grease the conical surface with a thin
layer of Molub Alloy paste. > Greasing cone ring
Make sure that no dirt gets into it!

- Fit the wheel carefully.
- 3.1 Use > VAS 6266A - wheel fitting trolley on the rear axle to prevent damage to the rim and brake cover plate!

On vehicles with PCCB brake discs, use > 9794 - assembly aid

Information
- When tightening the central bolt, make sure that the tool remains fully engaged and does not slide off even slightly (risk of damage to the lockable wheel bolt/locking mechanism).
- Fit and screw in the central bolt by hand -Arrows-
until it is too difficult to turn by hand.

- Fit > 9796 - socket wrench
as for removal and press on until it engages with an audible click > Positioning the tool correctly.

- Tighten the central bolt according to the specified tightening procedure using > V.A.G 1601 - torque wrench
and > 9796 - socket wrench

For this purpose, a helper must press the brake pedal forcefully and hold the steering wheel firmly!

- 6.1 Step 1 -1-
: Tighten to an initial tightening torque of > Step 1 600 Nm (444 ftlb.)

- 6.2 Step 2 -2- : Loosen central bolt by 90° > Step 2: Loosen central bolt - 90° .
- 6.3 Step 3 -3-
Tighten to a final tightening torque of > Step 3 600 Nm (444 ftlb.) WARNING: Unsecured central bolt

- After fitting the wheel, make sure that the locking pin is engaged correctly in the central bolt.
- 6.1 Step 1 -1-
: Tighten to an initial tightening torque of > Step 1 600 Nm (444 ftlb.)
- Pull off > 9796 - socket wrench
and check that the locking pin -1-
has engaged in the central bolt. The locking pin is then flush with the inner toothing chamfer of the central bolt -Arrow

If the locking pin -1-
is still at the rear position > Central bolt unsecured
, the central bolt is unsecured and must be secured manually to prevent it from becoming loose.

To do this, screw M8 screw -2-
2 to 3 turns into the locking pin -1-
and move it up and down slightly -Arrows-
until it engages correctly in the central bolt.
This applies to both road and race track use.

If the locking pin -1-
is still at the rear position > Central bolt unsecured
, the central bolt is unsecured and must be secured manually to prevent it from becoming loose.
- Fit hub cap.
Fitting hub cap
- 8.1 Lightly grease the rubber ring on the cap if necessary.
- 8.2 Align the hub cap so that the positioning lug -1- is pointing into the recess -2- of the central bolt.
- 8.3 Push the hub cap into its seat until it locks securely in place.
