Removing Drive Shaft

  1. Release parking brake.
  2. Shift transmission to neutral gear.
  3. Remove nut -1-  securing drive shaft to wheel hub. Another person is needed in order to press the brake.
    1. 3.1 For vehicles without central wheel bolt:  Unscrew nut -1-  .

    2. 3.2 For vehicles with central wheel bolt: 
      1. 3.2.1  Remove nut -1-  using > 9471 - socket wrench  .

    3. 3.3  Replace nut.

      Information 

      Make sure that the drive shaft does not hang down as this may damage the joint.

  4. Loosen the drive shaft -1-  at the transmission flange.

    1. 4.1  Unscrew screws -2-  and remove plates (turn the drive shaft in order to access the screws).
    2. 4.2 Replace screws and plates. 
    3. 4.3  Secure the drive shaft to prevent it from falling down.
  5. Carefully press drive shaft pins rut of the wheel hub.
    1. 5.1 For vehicles without central wheel bolt:  Press the drive shaft in using > VAS 6926 - puller set -1-  .

    2. 5.2 For vehicles with central wheel bolt:

      Central bolts: Pressing out drive shaft (shown as an example)

      1. 5.2.1  Screw-in > 9794 - assembly aid  (hub extension) -1-  into the wheel hub (up to the anchor block on the wheel hub).

        Spindle -2-  must not yet touch the drive shaft. Turn spindle -2-  as required.

      2. 5.2.2  Turn spindle -2-  to the right. Counter at the surface -3-  with an open-ended wrench (a/f 36 mm) at the same time. Continue to turn spindle -2-  until the drive shaft is pressed out of the wheel hub.
    3. 5.3  Remove drive shaft in a downward direction -Arrow A-  .

  6. Remove > VAS 6926 - puller set  /> 9794 - assembly aid  from the wheel hub.
  7. Check inner and outer drive shaft bellows for damage.
    1. 7.1  If the inner joint is damaged, the bellows and CV joint can be replaced.

      > 422855 REPLACE BOOT CV JOINT 

    2. 7.2  If the outer joint is damaged, the drive shaft must be replaced.
