Preliminary Work

  1. Place protective covers on the vehicle.
    WARNING: Hot fluid 
    • Danger of scalding 

      → Let the fluid cool down.

      → Wear personal protective gear.

  2. Drain coolant.

  3. Remove the battery.

  4. Unscrew fastening screws -2-  and remove battery console -1-  .
    1. 4.1 Disconnect electric plug connection from fuel pump control unit at the underside of the battery console.

  5. Remove air inlet housing.

    Refer to WM, 851419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR INLET HOUSING

  6. Remove carbon canister.

  7. Remove filler flap.

    Refer to WM, 553719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FILLER FLAP

  8. Remove front part of front wheel housing liner at the left and right.

    Refer to the appropriate service information.

    WARNING: Flammable or explosive materials 
    • Danger of fire or explosion 

      → Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.

      → Use suction to remove ignitable vapors.

      → Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.

  9. Place a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or on the vehicle.

  10. Drain fuel.

    1. 10.1 Remove flange on the fuel tank in order to extract fuel if necessary. 

      201519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FUEL LEVEL SENDER 

    2. 10.2 The amount of fuel left in the fuel tank must not be more than a quarter of the tank capacity! 
  11. All-wheel drive vehicles only:

    Remove front-axle final drive.

    Refer to WM, 398819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING ALL-WHEEL FINAL DRIVE

  12. Remove front-axle cross member.

  1. Place protective covers on the vehicle.
  2. Place a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or on the vehicle.

  3. Drain coolant.

  4. Remove the battery.

  5. Remove battery console -1-  .
    1. 5.1 Unscrew screws -2-  .
    2. 5.2 Lift battery console -1-  , loosen electric plug connection on the underside of the fuel pump control unit and remove battery console -1-  .

  6. Remove air inlet housing.

    Refer to WM, 851419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR INLET HOUSING

  7. Remove carbon canister.

  8. Remove filler flap.

    Refer to WM, 553719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FILLER FLAP

  9. Remove front parts of front wheel housing liners.

    Refer to the appropriate service information.

  10. If the fuel tank fill level is more than a quarter of capacity:

    Drain fuel.

  11. Remove front-axle cross member.
