Preliminary Work

- Place protective covers on the vehicle.WARNING: Hot fluid
- Danger of scalding
→ Let the fluid cool down.
→ Wear personal protective gear.
- Danger of scalding
- Drain coolant.
- Remove the battery.
- Unscrew fastening screws -2-
and remove battery console -1-
.
- 4.1 Disconnect electric plug connection from fuel pump control unit at the underside of the battery console.
Removing and installing battery console
- Remove air inlet housing.
Refer to WM, 851419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR INLET HOUSING
- Remove carbon canister.
- Remove filler flap.
- Remove front part of front wheel housing liner at the left and right.
Refer to the appropriate service information.
WARNING: Flammable or explosive materials- Danger of fire or explosion
→ Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.
→ Use suction to remove ignitable vapors.
→ Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.

- Place a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or on the vehicle.

- Drain fuel.
200317 DRAINING AND FILLING FUEL
- 10.1 Remove flange on the fuel tank in order to extract fuel if necessary.
- 10.2 The amount of fuel left in the fuel tank must not be more than a quarter of the tank capacity!
- All-wheel drive vehicles only:
Remove front-axle final drive.

- Remove front-axle cross member.
- Place protective covers on the vehicle.
- Place a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or on the vehicle.

- Drain coolant.
- Remove the battery.
- Remove battery console -1-

- 5.1 Unscrew screws -2- .
- 5.2 Lift battery console -1- , loosen electric plug connection on the underside of the fuel pump control unit and remove battery console -1- .
Battery console
- Remove air inlet housing.

- Remove carbon canister.

- If the fuel tank fill level is more than a quarter of capacity:
Drain fuel.
- Remove front-axle cross member.
