Preliminary Work

WARNING: Vehicle can fall down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
  • Risk of damage to the vehicle 

    → Do not place any solid objects under the raised vehicle.

    → Ensure that the lifting platform is prevented from lowering.

    → Remove solid objects before lowering the vehicle.

    → Raise the vehicle only at the jacking points provided.

    → The outer jacking points should be used primarily.

CAUTION: Hot components 
  • Risk of burns 

    → Let hot components cool down.

    → Wear personal protective gear.

WARNING: Caustic fluids 
  • Danger of chemical burns 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Ensure that there is good ventilation.

    → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

    → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

  1. Read out the fault memory using the PIWIS Tester  .

    Refer to WM, 033500 ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS FAULT MEMORY

  2. Loosen rear wheel bolts (do not remove).

  3. Open the engine compartment lid and extend the rear spoiler using the rocker switch in the passenger compartment.

    In the case of Cabriolet vehicles:  Open convertible-top compartment lid.

    Refer to the appropriate service information.

  4. Loosen ground strap for battery.

    Refer to WM, 978509 LOOSENING AND SECURING GROUND STRAP FOR BATTERY

  5. Drain refrigerant.

    Refer to WM, 870317 DRAINING AND FILLING REFRIGERANT R134A .

    Refer to WM, 870317 DRAINING AND FILLING REFRIGERANT R1234YF .

  6. Open coolant cap -1-  and engine oil -2-  on the service tray.

  7. Remove cover on engine-compartment blower -1-  .

    Unclip cover at the front -2-  and rear -3-  and remove it.

    Disconnect central connector -1-  .

  9. Unclip cover -1-  under the rear spoiler at the left and right.

  10. Remove rear spoiler.

    Refer to WM, 66581900 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR SPOILER

  11. Disconnect lines -1-  for acoustic simulator at the left and right.

    Refer to the appropriate service information.

    Unclip lines at the body connection piece -2-  and remove them.

  12. Pull off oil filler hose on oil filler neck -1-  at the left by opening the spring band clamp -3-  .

  13. Remove rear apron.

    Refer to WM, 635519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR APRON

  14. Remove charge-air cooler.

  15. Disconnect cable plugs -1 and 3-  on oxygen sensors downstream of catalytic converter and expose cables.

    Disconnect cable plug for oxygen sensor.

    Unclip oxygen sensor cables at the retaining clips -2 and 4-  and set them down between the engine and engine carrier.

  16. Loosen differential pressure sensor -1-  at the left and right.

    Disconnect cable plug -2-  and pull differential pressure sensor out of the brackets -Arrows-  .

  17. Loosen exhaust temperature sensor control unit -1-  .

    Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .

    Loosen exhaust temperature sensor control unit -1-  from holder.

    Loosen electric lines -3-  from the holders -4-  .

    Expose electric lines -3-  .

  18. Release and disconnect cable plug for engine wire harness -1-  in the engine compartment at the right.

  19. Remove cover -2-  on engine control unit.

    Unscrew nuts -1-  and remove cover.

  20. Disconnect engine wire harness at the engine control unit (DME) -1-  .

    Release and disconnect the front three cable plugs -2-  on the engine control unit.

    The cable plugs are colour-coded and their position on the control unit is indicated by colored dots.

  21. Disconnect air-conditioning lines, close off using stoppers and set them aside.

    Item -1-  :

    Refer to Removing and installing air-conditioning compressor - evaporator refrigerant line (air-conditioning compressor section to engine compartment connection point) - "Removal" in the appropriate service information. 

    Item -2-  :

    Refer to Removing and installing air-conditioning compressor - condenser refrigerant line (section from air-conditioning compressor to engine compartment connection point) - on "Removal" in the appropriate service information. 

    Unscrew screws -3 and 4-  at the connection point and close off the lines

  22. In the case of Cabriolet vehicles: Remove support plate.

  23. Remove cover for center and rear underbody.

    Refer to the appropriate service information.

  24. Draining coolant from the engine.

    193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT - on "Draining"

    Fit both drain plugs with new sealing rings after draining coolant.

    Drain plug on coolant regulator housing: > Tightening torque 25 Nm (19 ftlb.) +/- 2 Nm (1.5 ftlb.) 

    Drain plug to coolant pipe: > Tightening torque 25 Nm (19 ftlb.) +/- 2 Nm (1.5 ftlb.) 

  25. Loosen drive shafts -1-  on the transmission.

    Unscrew screws -2-  . Get another person to counter at the relevant wheel.

    Replace screws.

  26. Remove rear wheels.

    440519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WHEEL - on "Removing"

  27. Disconnect intake manifold -1-  and molded hose -4-  from the intake air line and turbocharger on the left and right.

    Loosen V-band clamp -2-  . Right side only:  Loosen vent line -3-  and pull off intake pipe.

    Undo screw-type clamp -5-  and remove molded hose.

  28. Pull plug connection for oxygen sensor -1-  upstream of catalytic converter out of the holder on the carrier and disconnect cable plug -2-  .

    Unclip cable -4-  .
