Replacing Instrument Cluster

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Risk of irreparable damage to control unit 
• Risk of damage to control unit 
• Fault entries in the control unit 
• Coding in the control unit is aborted 
• Malfunctions in control unit, even during programming 
  • Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
  • Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.
  • Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 90 A to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester  .

1. Document the total mileage and fuel level.
2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
3. Select the vehicle type if required.
4. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview.  The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
5. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
6. Control unit replacement  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
7. Read data  must be selected. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
8. Check the chassis number and press F12.
9. Switch off ignition and replace control unit.

10. Switch on ignition and select Instrument cluster  control unit.
11. Read out the fault memory  and erase it if necessary.
12. Extended identifications  must now be selected.
13. Select Vehicle identification number  and enter the VIN, then press "Enter" to confirm your entry.
14. Select Maintenance/repairs, Control unit replacement and Write data,  then press F12 and press F8 to start. The data that was read out is loaded.
15. System Tester displays the message: Data has been written.  Press F12.
16. Select Maintenance/repairs, Control unit replacement  and the Set total mileage function  and press F12.
17. Read the warning on the Tester and press F12.
18. Select the total distance and enter the value that was read out in Step 1. Then press "Enter" to confirm your entry and press F8 to write data.
19. Write service interval  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
20. Read and follow the warnings and instructions on the Tester. Look up and copy the servicing values from the customer service booklet. Press F12 to continue.
21. Coding/programming  must be selected.

    Information 

    If it is not possible to perform automatic coding, the following error message will be displayed: "Coding was not completed successfully." 

    • End with [F12]." In this case, the instrument cluster must first be reset to factory settings so that the instrument cluster can then be coded (automatically).
    IMPORTANT: The customer must be informed.  If the instrument cluster is reset to factory settings, all customer-specific settings will be lost.
    • To reset the instrument cluster to factory settings, the following must be selected in the Instrument cluster menu: Vehicle -> Settings -> Reset -> Factory settings -> Yes. 
22. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
23. Read out the fault memory  and erase it if necessary.
24. Check the function of the instrument cluster and fuel level gauge during the test drive.
