Removing Tie-Rod Ball

Power-steering gear with tie rods

  1. Tie-rod ball
  2. Bellows
  3. Tie rod
  1. Remove tie rod from wheel bearing housing.

    Pressing off ball joint on tie rod

    1. 1.1  Unscrew lock nut and use a > 9546 - screwdriver  to counter at the ball-joint pin.
    2. 1.2  Coat the bellows and press-out tool with tire mounting paste to prevent damage to the bellows on the ball joint.
    3. 1.3  Press off tie-rod ball joint using > 9560- press-out tool -1-  .
  2. Unclip and remove control arm spoiler (air guide for brake cooling) at the back of the diagonal arm.

  3. Remove tie-rod ball -1-  from the tie rod -2-  .

    Removing tie-rod ball

    1. 3.1  Mark the position of the tie-rod ball on the thread using a marker.
    2. 3.2  Loosen lock nut -3-  on the tie rod. Counter the tie-rod ball -1-  at the flattened area -arrow-  using a suitable open-ended wrench.

      Information 

      Count and write down the number of turns when unscrewing the tie-rod ball from the tie rod.

      This eliminates the need to perform an approximate adjustment of the steering trapeze during reassembly.

      However, this does not  replace suspension alignment.

    3. 3.3  Unscrew tie-rod ball -1-  from the tie rod. Counter at the hexagon on the tie rod -2-  while doing this.
