Assembling Rear Spring Strut

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Preloaded or pressurised components
  • Risk of squashing or bruising
    • Do not reach into the danger area.
    • Relieve tension on components before starting work.
    • Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

Information

If the coil spring is replaced: Always replace coil springs in pairs only!

Information

  1. Clamp the spring strut in a suitable clamping block (tensioning device for spring struts). Alternatively, the spring clamp can also be held in a retaining device.
  2. Push the shock absorber boot/rubber stop assembly onto the piston rod.
  3. Push the pre-tensioned coil spring onto the shock absorber so that the end of the coil spring is touching the spring plate stop. If you are using new coil springs, observe centering ring allocation.
  4. Fit stop plate -1-  at the correct position (with curvature downwards).

    Centering ring

    • Coil spring marking -1- comprising two different coloured lines (e.g. one red and one brown) indicates the spring rate and spring length (depending on vehicle variant and equipment).
    • A marking -2- comprising one coloured line indicates the coil spring tolerance group (load group) and determines the thickness of the centering ring -arrows- (tolerance compensation). The coloured line -2- is either YELLOW or BLUE.
    • If you are installing new coil springs, then order the 3 mm and 6 mm centering rings at the same time. As coil springs of load group 1 or 2 will be supplied, you will then have the correct centering rings for installation (for tolerance compensation).
    • Yellow coloured line -2- = use 3-mm centering ring. Blue coloured line -2- = use 6-mm centering ring.
  5. Fit spring plate using centering ring and spring-strut mount. The three fastening bolts for the spring-strut mount must be positioned on the cut-outs in the centering ring -arrow-  .

    Positioning centering ring/spring-strut mount

  6. Position spring-strut mount.
    1. 6.1  Fit stop plate at the correct position (domed side upwards) and screw a new lock nut onto the piston rod (do not tighten fully yet).
    2. 6.2  Position the spring-strut mount in such a way that the angle between the fastening bolt -2-  (on the sloping spring-strut mount part) and the position plate -1-  (on the shock absorber) is > Angle 180°  .
  7. Tighten lock nut on the piston rod using > 9630/2 - socket-wrench insert  . Counter at the hexagon on the piston rod using a wrench at the same time. > Tightening torque 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.) + 5 Nm (3.7 ftlb.)
