Removing And Installing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing

The procedure for removing and installing the wheel bearing housing is identical to the procedure for removing and installing the spring strut

Wheel bearing housing is removed with spring strut fitted

If the wheel bearing housing, wheel hub or wheel bearing must be replaced, see appropriate procedure.

Replacing rear wheel bearing housing 

  1. Move rear brake into installation position.
    1. 1.1  > 9818 - PIWIS Tester II  must be connected and started.
    2. 1.2  Select in the control unit overview.
    3. 1.3  must now be selected.
    4. 1.4  must be selected.
  2. Remove spring strut with rear wheel bearing housing and remove spring strut from the wheel bearing housing.

  3. Remove brake disc.

    Brake disc fastening screws

    1. 3.1  Unscrew fastening screws -arrows-  .
  4. Remove parking brake shoes.

    > 468320 REMOVING AND INSTALLING BRAKE SHOES - portion on "Removing"

  5. Remove parking brake spreader device (actuator).

    > 468519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SPREADER DEVICE (ACTUATOR) - portion on "Removing"

    Mounting for brake cover plate

    1. 6.1  Unscrew fastening screws -1-  .
  7. Remove speed sensor -2-.

    Mounting for speed sensor

    1. 7.1  Unscrew fastening screw -1- 
  8. Press out wheel hub with wheel bearing and press into new wheel bearing housing.

    Information 

    • Only grease speed sensor using Optitemp (Optitemp LG2, 25 ml spray can). 
    • Optitemp can be ordered using the Porsche Electronic Parts Catalogue (PET). 
    • The bore for the speed sensor mounting must be free of dirt. 
  9. Fit speed sensor

    Mounting for speed sensor

    1. 9.1  Tighten fastening screw -1-  > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) 
  10. Fit brake cover plate -2-  .

    1. 10.1  Tighten fastening screws -1-  .
  11. Install parking brake spreader device (actuator).

    > 468519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SPREADER DEVICE (ACTUATOR) - portion on "Removing"

  12. Install parking brake shoes,

    > 468320 REMOVING AND INSTALLING BRAKE SHOES - portion on "Removing"

  13. Fit brake disc.

    Brake disc fastening screws

    1. 13.1  Clean the levelling and centering surfaces on the brake disc and wheel hub.
    2. 13.2  Apply a very thin coat of Optimoly TA (aluminium paste) to the centering surface on the wheel hub.
    3. 13.3  Tighten fastening screws -arrows-  . > Tightening torque 5 Nm (3.7 ftlb.) 
  14. Install spring strut with rear wheel bearing housing.

  15. If a new actuator was installed:  Confirm actuator in > 9818- PIWIS Tester II  .
    1. 15.1  Select in the control unit overview.
    2. 15.2  must now be selected.
    3. 15.3  must be selected.
  16. Adjust parking-brake shoes.

    > 468316 ADJUSTING PARKING-BRAKE SHOES
