Lowering And Securing The Engine

  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    • → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
  1. Remove air cleaner housing.

    > 242519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CLEANER HOUSING .

  2. Remove rear underbody cover.

    > WM, 519419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR REAR UNDERBODY .

    For working under the vehicle: 

    Information 

    • It may only be supported over a large area at the oil pan. 
    • Localised loading is not permitted. 
  3. Vehicles with particle filter: 

    Remove rear wall cover.

    > 555919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WALL COVER

  4. Vehicles with particle filter: 

    Disconnect differential pressure sensor hoses -1-  .

    1. 4.1 Loosen spring band clamps -2-  using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers  and disconnect hoses -1-  .
    2. 4.2 Close off line openings using suitable stoppers.

  5. Support the engine at the oil pan using a transmission jack.

    Recommendation: > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack 

    For working in the engine or passenger compartment: 

  6. Support the engine at the oil pan using a jack with mounting plate.

    Recommendation: Hydraulic garage jack H 2 SL and mounting plate, e.g. VAS 6867

    Information 

    • When lowering the engine, it must not rest on the rear-axle cross member. 
    • The exhaust system must not touch against the body or rear apron when lowering it. 
    • Loosen clamps on the tailpipe cover if necessary and turn tailpipe cover downwards. 
    • Always be careful of hoses, lines and cables when lowering the system! 
    • Always avoid collisions! 
  7. Loosen collar nuts -3-  on the engine mounts -1-  .
    1. 7.1 Loosen collar nuts initially only as far as required so that the nuts are still fitted fully on the thread.
    2. 7.2 If the engine has to be lowered further, unscrew collar nuts.
    3. 7.3 Carefully lower the engine using the transmission jack or workshop jack only as far as required so that no components are touching or damaged!

  8. Secure the engine again after carrying out the required work.
    1. 8.1 Raise the engine to installation position.
    2. 8.2 Fit and tighten M12 collar nuts.

      Initial tightening:  > Initial tightening 40 Nm (30 ftlb.) 

      Final tightening:  > Final tightening torque angle 90° 

  9. Vehicles with particle filter: 

    Secure differential pressure sensor hoses -1-  .

    1. 9.1 Push on differential pressure sensor hoses -1-  and tighten spring band clamps -2-  using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers  .

  10. Vehicles with particle filter: 

    Install rear wall cover.

    > 555919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WALL COVER

  11. Install cover for rear underbody.

    > WM, 519419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR REAR UNDERBODY .

  12. Install air cleaner housing.

    > 242519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CLEANER HOUSING .

  13. Complete the vehicle.
