Replacing Front-End Electronics Control Unit

Information 

Loss of communication or voltage on a new front-end/rear-end electronics control unit connected for the first time can cause damage or irreparable damage to the new control unit. It is then no longer possible to commission the control unit.

Never disconnect the connectors for a control unit you have connected for the first time until the commissioning process has been completed fully and successfully.

Ensure a reliable power supply.

Information 

All remote controls (keys) are required for teaching a DME, front-end electronics (front BCM), rear-end electronics (rear BCM), electronic steering lock (ELV) control unit for example, or for teaching remote controls (keys).

Remote controls (keys) that are not taught during this procedure will no longer be recognized by the vehicle.

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Risk of irreparable damage to control unit 
• Risk of damage to control unit 
• Fault entries in the control unit 
• Coding in the control unit is aborted 
• Malfunctions in control unit, even during programming 
  • Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
  • Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.

Connect a suitable battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the jump-start terminals.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms; different text or additions may appear in the PIWIS Tester  .

Information 

If Home Link/garage door opener is installed on the vehicle, the garage door remote controls must be re-taught to the vehicle after replacing the front-end electronics. See the relevant Driver's Manual.

The customer needs to have the garage door remote controls for this purpose.

If the front-end electronics coding/programming cannot be read out, the customer-specific settings must be queried or entered together with the customer.

1. In the vehicle,  select the Settings  menu under Vehicle  in the instrument cluster.  Read out the customer-specific settings in the Light & Visibility, Seat adjustment, Steering wheel button  and Locking mechanism  menus and document in handwritten form.
2. Switch off ignition and replace control unit.

3. >9900 - PIWIS Tester 3  must be connected to the vehicle before starting it. Switch on ignition.
4. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
5. Select the Front-end electronics  control unit in the overview.  Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
6. Coding/programming  must be selected.
7. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
   1. 7.1 The Tester displays the message: Coding was completed successfully.
8. Go back to the overview. 
9. In the overview,  press F7 to switch to the Additional menu. 
10. Engine immobilizer start-up  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
    1. 10.1 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
    2. 10.2 Teach engine immobilizer according to menu guidance.
11. Extended identifications  must now be selected.
    1. 11.1 Vehicle identification number  must be selected.
    2. 11.2 Enter the chassis number and press F8 to store it.
12. Go back to the overview. 
13. Select Front-end electronics  control unit.
14. Coding/programming  must be selected.
15. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
    1. 15.1 The Tester displays the message: Coding was completed successfully.
16. Initialize and calibrate the steering-angle sensor.

17. If fitted: Teach garage door opener. 
    1. 17.1 Select the Front-end electronics  control unit in the overview. 
    2. 17.2 Drive links/checks  must be selected.
    3. 17.3 Teach  must now be selected.
    4. 17.4 Select Garage door opener - teach receiver. 
       1. 17.4.1 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
       2. 17.4.2 Teach all garage door opener remote controls according to menu guidance (see Driver's Manual).
18. If fitted: Calibrate PDCC. 
    1. 18.1 Select the Roll stabilization PDCC  control unit in the overview. 
    2. 18.2 Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
    3. 18.3 Commissioning  must be selected.
       1. 18.3.1 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
       2. 18.3.2 Calibrate roll stabilization according to menu guidance.
19. If fitted: Calibrate PASM. 
    1. 19.1 Select the Chassis control PASM  control unit in the overview. 
    2. 19.2 Coding/programming  must be selected.
    3. 19.3 Automatic coding  must now be selected.
       1. 19.3.1 The Tester displays the message: Coding was completed successfully.
    4. 19.4 Read out fault memory  must be selected.
       1. 19.4.1 Erase fault memory.
    5. 19.5 Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
    6. 19.6 Calibration  must be selected.
       1. 19.6.1 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
       2. 19.6.2 Calibrate PASM according to menu guidance.
20. In the overview,  press F7 to switch to the Additional menu. 
21. Select Read out and erase all fault memories.  If necessary, work through existing faults and delete them.
22. Switch off ignition. Switch off and disconnect the Tester.
23. Lock and unlock the vehicle and start the engine using all remote controls.
24. In the vehicle,  select the Settings  menu under Vehicle  in the instrument cluster.  Re-apply the customer-specific settings previously read from Light & Visibility, Seat adjustment, Steering wheel button  and Locking mechanism.
