Installing Three-Point Belt, Front

WARNING: Incorrect handling of seat-belt pretensioner unit 
  • Triggering of seat-belt pretensioner unit 

    → Observe safety regulations for handling seat-belt pretensioner units.

    → Observe disposal regulations for seat-belt pretensioner units.

    > 6X00IN DISPOSAL OF AIRBAG AND SEAT-BELT PRETENSIONER UNITS

    → After disconnecting the battery, wait 1 minute before disconnecting the seat-belt pretensioner unit.

    → Remove ignition key and disconnect the battery. Route or insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.

    → If removed for an extended period, the seat-belt pretensioner unit must be stored in a safe place.

    → Transport the seat-belt pretensioner unit in such a way that the seat belt can retract safely if it is actuated.

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

Information 

Always replace screws on the three-point seat belt. Micro-self-locking screws must not be adjusted or loosened and then screwed on again.

Do not twist the three-point seat belt during installation.

  1. Install belt reel -1-  .
    1. 1.1 Insert belt reel -1-  and fit screw -11-  by hand.
    2. 1.2 Push the floor covering aside and screw in and tighten screw -10-  > Tightening torque 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.) 
    3. 1.3 Tighten screw -11-  > Tightening torque 5.6 Nm (4.1 ftlb.) 

      Information 

      Route electric lines outside of the belt roll-up area.

    4. 1.4 Plug in and lock electric plug connections -9-  .

  2. Fit retaining bar -8-  and screw in and tighten screw -7-  > Tightening torque 5.6 Nm (4.1 ftlb.)

    Information 

    Once the screw has been tightened, the belt deflector must level out on its own in a vertical position or in the relevant support direction.

  3. Fit belt deflector -6-  and screw -5-  in and tighten screw > Tightening torque 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)

  4. Fit seat belt mount -4-  and screw in and tighten screw -3-  > Tightening torque 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)

  5. Install trim panel on belt fastening point.
  6. Connect battery ground strap.

  7. Teach seat-belt pretensioners on vehicles with optional ACC.
    1. 7.1 Connect tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
    2. 7.2 Select the vehicle if required.
    3. 7.3 In the Overview  , select the Airbag  control unit. Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)? Press F11 to continue.
    4. 7.4 Select Maintenance/repairs. 
    5. 7.5 Teach reversible seat-belt pretensioners  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
    6. 7.6 Follow the instructions and information on the Tester and press F8 to start.
    7. 7.7 Read out fault memory. Clear it if necessary.
    8. 7.8 Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect tester from the vehicle.

Information 

Dispose of replaced and non-ignited airbag and seat-belt pretensioner units in accordance with local legal requirements and transport regulations.
