Replacing Rear Wheel Bearing

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press 
  • Risk of squashing

    → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

Information 

The following tool sets are required for replacing the wheel bearing:

1 Wheel hub
2 Hexagon-head bolt, M8 x 35 > Initial tightening 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 90° 
3 Mounting plate
4 Wheel bearing
5 Wheel bearing housing
6 Ball-joint bearing, see > 421755 REPLACING TRAILING-ARM BEARING 
  1. Press out wheel hub.

    1 Workshop press ram
    2 > VW454 - Pressure piece 
    3 Wheel bearing housing
    4 > VAS 251 413 - Separating device 
    WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
    • Risk of squashing or crushing 

      → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

    1. 1.1 Place a suitable aid (e.g. foam) under the workshop press as the wheel hub will fall to the floor after you press it out.

      Information 

      Tighten separating device only as far as required so that the wheel hub is not damaged!

    2. 1.2 > VAS 251 413 - Separating device  must be aligned between the wheel hub and wheel bearing housing in such a way that all fastening screws on the mounting plate are flat against the jaws of the separating device.
    3. 1.3 Insert wheel bearing housing with > VAS 251 413 - Separating device  into the workshop press as shown -Illustration-  .
    4. 1.4 > VW454 - Pressure piece-2-  must be aligned with the wheel hub.
    5. 1.5 Press out wheel hub.
  2. Remove mounting plate -1-  .

    1. 2.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
  3. Press out the wheel bearing.

    Pressing out wheel bearing

    1 > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve 
    2 T10205/5 
    1. 3.1 Fit wheel bearing housing on the pressure piece T10205/5  in such a way that the wheel bearing can be pressed out into the pressure piece.
    2. 3.2 > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve  must be aligned with the wheel bearing outer ring.
    3. 3.3 Press out the wheel bearing.
  4. Press out wheel bearing inner ring.

    2 > VW454 - Pressure piece 
    3 Wheel bearing inner ring
    4 > VAS 251 413 - Separating device 
    5 Wheel hub

    1. 4.1 Place a suitable aid (e.g. foam) under the workshop press as the wheel hub will fall to the floor after you press it out.

      Information 

      Tighten separating device only as far as required so that the wheel hub is not damaged!

    2. 4.2 > VAS 251 413 - Separating device  must be tightened carefully under the wheel bearing inner ring.
    3. 4.3 Insert wheel hub with > VAS 251 413 - Separating device  into the workshop press as shown -Illustration-  .
    4. 4.4 > VW454 - Pressure piece  must be aligned with the wheel hub.
    5. 4.5 Press out wheel bearing inner ring.

    Information 

    • The multipole seal on the wheel bearing must not come into contact with highly magnetic tools. 
    • Installing the wheel bearing: The magnetic side must be facing the speed sensor (inside of wheel bearing housing). 
    • Use the  > T10473 - sensor gauge or a paper clip to find the magnetic side. 
  5. Press in wheel bearing.

    2 T10205/10 
    1. 5.1 Heat wheel bearing housing -1-  using a heating plate -2-  to > Temperature 80°C  .

      Heating wheel bearing housing (example)

    2. 5.2 Align wheel bearing housing on pressure piece T10230/14. 
    3. 5.3 Align wheel bearing on the wheel bearing housing in such a way that the magnetic ring is facing downwards.
    4. 5.4 Fit pressure piece T10205/10  so that it is flush on the wheel bearing.

    5. 5.5 Press the wheel bearing in as far as it will go (check pressure gauge! When the pressure increases rapidly, the wheel bearing is in installation position).
  6. Install mounting plate -1-  .

    1. 6.1 Tighten fastening screws -2-  > Initial tightening 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 90°

    4 Wheel bearing housing
    5 > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve 
    1. 7.1 Align the wheel bearing housing with the > 9694/3 - press-on sleeve  in such a way that the press-on sleeve is flush with the wheel bearing inner ring.
    2. 7.2 Align wheel hub with the wheel bearing housing.
    3. 7.3 T10205/10 must be aligned with the wheel hub.
    4. 7.4 Press the wheel hub in as far as it will go (check pressure gauge! When the pressure increases rapidly, the wheel hub is in installation position).
