Removing Air Bellows

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
  • Risk of crushing 
  • Risk of damage to components 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

CAUTION: Escaping residual air 
  • Risk of eye injuries 

    → Wear protective goggles.

NOTIFICATION 

Air springs can become kinked/fall out

Information 

To prevent damage to the air suspension bellows, pay particular attention to the following points when handling air suspension bellows:

  1. Lift up wheel bearing housing.

    Support T10149 on wheel hub

    1. 1.1 Fit > T10149 - support  on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  and secure it at the very top bore of the wheel hub -Arrow-  using a wheel bolt. > Support T10149 on wheel hub 
    2. 1.2 Raise wheel bearing housing with > T10149 - mounting  and > VAS 6931 - gearbox and unit lifter  at the wheel hub until a length -Dimension A-  of the air bellows between the measuring edges of less than 290 mm  is reached. However, the length must not be less than 220 mm  .

    Measuring length of air bellows

    Information 

    The cutting ring -1-  and Voss threaded joint -2-  must remain on the air line -3-  .

  2. Disconnect air line for air bellows -1-  .

    1. 2.1 Unscrew union nut on air line -2-  .
    2. 2.2 Disconnect air line -1-  .
    3. 2.3 Close off line connections to prevent dirt from getting in using a suitable stopper.
  3. Lower > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  .

    Information 

    To prevent damage to the air suspension bellows, pay particular attention to the following points when handling air suspension bellows:

    Length l of air suspension bellows

    • The air spring bellows must never be bled completely. This applies to both installed and removed air spring bellows. 
    • Air spring bellows must only be bled as described under 

      > 430117 - BLEEDING AND FILLING THE LEVELLING SYSTEM 

    • An air suspension bellows is depressurised if the pressure is less than 1.5 bar. 
    • The air suspension bellows must not be pulled apart. 
    • The air suspension bellows must not be bent. 
    • The air suspension bellows must not be carried at the insertion pin. 
    • The air suspension bellows must not be squeezed together to a length l less than 220 mm. 
    • The vehicle must never be lowered when the levelling system is empty. 
    • Air suspension bellows must be installed in the vehicle within one year. 
  4. Remove air bellows -1-  .

    1. 4.1 Carefully press the pin -2-  on the mounting for the air bellows up out of the bore.
    2. 4.2 Remove stone guard -3-  .
    3. 4.3 Guide out air bellows -1-  .

      Air bellows must not be bent or twisted!
