Installing Steering-Gear Housing Bellows

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

Information 

During fitting, make sure that the bellows is not twisted and that the clamp lugs are easy to reach with the pliers.

  1. Replace bellows and clamps.
  2. Fit new bellows with new clamps. Make sure it fits perfectly both on the steering-gear housing and on the tie rod.

    Bellows

    1. 2.1 Push on bellows until you hear and feel it engaging securely on the tie rod.

      Dimension -a-  must be 2 mm.

  3. Install new spring band clamp -Arrow-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .

  4. Fit new clamp -Arrow-  using > V.A.G 1682A - clamp tensioner  .

    1. 4.1 Observe tightening torques for > V.A.G 1682A - clamp tensioner  :

      Clamp on passenger's side (diameter: 85 mm).

      > Tightening - torque 7 Nm (5 ftlb.) 

      Clamp on driver's side (diameter: 59 mm).

      > Tightening - torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
